In the same way that we have a "is Comment Was Helpful" flag, I think we should have one for "That Is A Dumb Remark".

Sorry, but I have had just too many absolutely inaccurate comments about the "processing" of my multi-image entry. I can write to each commenter, I know; but I think a public statistic showing how many of one's comments were considered dumb would be an interesting one.

The other side of the coin is always a good idea! Why not let people know when their comments are of no help at all! The whole idea of comments is to help us improve!

Bad idea... Unhelpful, rude comments are usually made by people that would enjoy the "attention" of seeing they got under someones skin. A flag that said "This comment annoyed me" would produce a rash of annoying comments by a bunch of mal-adjusted anti-social brats that crave any attention they can get because their mommies didn't hug them enough.

The best solution to comments that are annoying is to ignore them and the people that make them.

I disagree. It would be great, when having received what seems to be a particularly stupid comment, to check the commenter's "dumb" rating. It would allow one to evaluate the likely value of the comment.

You realize that most of your own "Misses the challenge completely" comments would probably get tagged? Dumb is in the eye of the beholder.

Over all, DPChallenge should be a place for learning about techniques and anything digital photography related. We all want comments on our photos .. and yes ... some may seem more negative or not as helpful than others but all it is .. is a comment ... just ignore the ones you dont want or dont agree with... or if it really bothers you - contact the commenter after the challenge to get more info on what they were trying to say ...

the box that is given for comments is just for that .. comments ... whether they are good or bad - they are still allowed to be typed in ... and comments are just comments ... they could include a "Critique" or just a "comment" ... hey at least you are still getting some sort of feedback on your photo :) ...

I know i'd rather have some sort of feedback than just a score ... I'm always looking forward to getting people's reactions to my images ... whether i agree with them or not ... because everyone is entitled to their opinion and by me submitting my photos - i'm opening that door to those opinions and i welcome every one of them :)

this comment makes me not want to comment at all. Not every comment should be a critique. It is frustrating when I just want to say "Wow, this is a beautiful picture" and you say it was dumb because it was not helpful.

People aren't psychic.

The very nature of this site - making comments based only on the image, without the benefit of the details from the photographer - means that commenters have to guess how the image has been achieved and comment on the basis of their guess.

So it's inevitable that they get it wrong sometimes.

The majority of commenters are aiming at being helpful to the best of their ability.

Personally, I'd rather that commenters are encouraged, even if they occasionally get their analysis wrong, than to see people slapped down for not being psychic and making the comments the photographer would like to see.

When the voting is over, your original "additional details will be visible. Additionally, you can then add you own comment to the photo, including -- if you wish -- an explanation of just how others' comments have "missed the mark..."

The problem with the helpful and unhelpful (were it to be added) tags is that people confuse them with "I liked this comment" and "I didn't like this comment." I've seen plenty of people who will mark a comment like "nice shot" as helpful, but not mark a longer, in-depth critique helpful because it said something negative about their shot. Just because I didn't make you feel good about yourself or your photo doesn't mean that I'm dumb or my critique was dumb and frankly, I'm not really interested in carrying around a "dumb rating" just because I'm not stroking people's egos.

In addition, if you're receiving many, many comments about the same thing, maybe you need to take that into consideration. Maybe the comments are inaccurate but artists rarely get to stand next to their work and explain it to viewers.

For me, if anyone, and especially several people, misunderstand my photo and give me comments that don't make any sense with what I was trying to accomplish or communicate, that gives me a signal that I was not clear in my image's communication. So they become helpful comments and allow me to analyze my photos for this in the future. The only unhelpful comments I can think of would be downright rude comments. And I just haven't had any of these. I've had blunt comments, and I've had comments that were not all that wise, but I can't think of any rude comments I've received.
