I have recently upgraded - I must admit, it surpassed my expectations in terms of image quality. It produces fantastically detailed and rich images. I also rather like the slight natural vignette cast by wide open lenses.

Oo I thought I was the only one!! I love a little vignetting in my images too :) Everybody else just seems to love complaining about it. |

Is the vignetting, light fall-off as bad as some people make it out to be? I know there were alot of complaints about this with wide angle lenses and wide open aperatures.

It really depends on your lenses, but I don't think it will be terrible with any of yours. I love my 50 1.8 and 24-105L with my 5D, not bad on the vignetting at all, although I can't vouch for any of your other glass. |

The only situations that I've found where I'd want to correct it are:
- Images shot as a component of a pano
- Astrophotography
In either of the above cases, there are pretty easy ways to accurately correct it. For normal shooting, though, I rarely notice it at all. It's no worse than it was with film.
Edit:
And I have to chime in with leaglebeagle... even though I had looked at a number of sample images, I was unprepared for just how much better the images are. It definitely exceeded my expectations.

I'll still take crappy photos. They'll just be higher resolution.

Yeah... 13M to 15M per raw file. Chews thru disk space like crazy! Even jpegs are *so* detailed that they are often in the 6-8M range.

That reminds me, I need to get a 4 gig card or a couple of 2 gigs or something.

I use 2GB cards, and get about 140-some images per card. If I were shooting events where I'd fill a 2GB card rpaidly, I might go higher in capacity, but I still like multiple cards, if one has problems I don't lose everything.
Oh, and FWIW, a fast FireWire reader really makes a big difference when transferring all those RAW files to the 'pooter. Better look at beefing up hdd space too!

oh ... yeah, I did use a 5d a few times, and I can honestly say that if I ever were to decided to bail on Nikon, it would definately be for a 5d.

To demonstrate why I am so impressed, I have uploaded a couple of pics:
Pleasant, mild vignetting:
Detail - not a very exciting picture, but a 100% crop of the dog's eye reveals what the dog is looking at, reflected in its eye (it is looking down a narrowboat). I was impressed!

That's an awesome camera. I had the opportunity to play with one a while back. Yer gonna fall in love the moment you look through the viewfinder.

Also, 2GB cards seem to be faster than the equivelant 4GB cards. That is, a Sandisk extreeme III 2GB is faster than the Extreeme III 4GB, etc. Check //www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-8198

I love my 5D. I haven't noticed any problem with vignetting, even with my 17-35zoom. I especially love that you get very little noise at high iso. You can get very good pics at iso 1600. I had never ribboned before, and got 2 ribbons within a month of getting the camera. The only problem I had was when I cleaned the sensor with my old sensor brush. Made a huge mess. I panicked until I found this link. //www.visibledust.com/technology.php?TCID=4 Fortunately my sensor is all cleaned up and taking awesome pics. Good luck with yours. |

I think that was the clencher. Until a couple of weeks ago I had only seen one in pictures. I finally went to the camera store that's about 1-1/2 hours away from where I live and actually held one. I remember looking through the viewfinder and saying to myself "Wow this is huge and bright. Everything was so clear. Even the AF points jumped out at you when they lit up.
