At the risk of sounding or appearing, well, weird, I wanted to highlight one of my "favorite" photographers this week, and perhaps weekly. If it seems like it was worthwhile, I'll probably do another one next week, or better yet, if someone else highlights one of their faves next week, I may do another at other times in the future. Feel free to chime in! We can all feel warm and cozy together.
This week, I have been studying Natasha's wonderful work! Her profile:

I find her work very stimulating and relaxing at the same time: kind of like the feeling kava kava root has on you when you chill at night in front of a good book. Perhaps from having lived in Japan for a while, many of her images have a very graceful simplicity that is both mood evoking and engaging to gaze at. One could almost say her style is "Oriental" in terms of elegance and using a minimum of artifacts in her photos to make her communications clear.
She gets this simplicity, I feel, through a skillful knowledge of lighting and composition, and her mastery of focus and point of view don't hurt her either. Who else could take a few bottles of milk and, through light and composition, turn it into a mythic communication of societal proportions?
Before I made my photo "Life Span:"

I studied this photo of hers very carefully to figure out how she used light to bring depth, emphasis and mood to her images:

Perhaps you can see some other similarities. I also found that the elegant simplicity she uses influenced my favorite photo I've ever taken in my whole stinking life (that most people feel only luke-warm about--rats!):

I can tell you that Natasha's images were clicking through my mind when I took that shot.
I encourage you to look at her stuff; it's fantastic and quite diverse, no matter what impression I've left here.
Anyway, this is how I operate on this site and how I improve--by looking at YOUR photographs and playing copycat. So thanks to you all and to the site admins for creating and managing this site, and especially to my favorite photographers--and you know who you are!
David

EXCELLENT!
This is so wonderful of you to highlight a "photographer of the week/month". Natasha *does* do marvelous work, and this is not only a great way to recognize that, but this helps the learning process for all here at dpc.
Thanks for pointing this out.
Your inspiration was well studied, as your photo is well done! |

Could you add a link to Natasha's page to your write up? I love her work too. |

Ok, I'll do one. My favorite current photographer on this site is mbardeen.
First, I think //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=13815 is one of the best shots on the site. I think this shot captured its challenge (Natural Numbers) in a way that I only WISH my shots could do.
Second, he's not here just to win ribbons and get score. As evidenced by his humorous Practical Jokes entry (dead ass last place - that IS laudable!!) Jokes entry
Third, he's got a cool name. ;)
Fourth, M has taken the time to walk me through some of my photos, telling me what's wrong and helping me stick with it. He has shown me a LOT about photography that I knew but couldn't apply - and gives me the motivation to get my moldy ass out of bed at 5am to go take pics! haha "Photographers are the people who are dedicated enough to catch a sunrise when smart people are sleeping."
So, I have lots of faves - I was actually going to profile you, David, but I'll leave that to someone else. I would include mk, rackat and Mag as others I'm studying currently.
M

Mavrik, glad you selected mbardeen. He's one of my G3 buddies and he has answered very kindly and patiently two emails about G3 questions i had. Thanks very much, Matt! |

David, what a great idea.
I think rather than restricting it to some weekly format we should all get into the habit of highlighting a favourite photographer whenever the mood takes us. Natasha was a great choice to get the ball rolling.
Someone who has caught my attention over recent days, even though she has never submitted to a challenge, is Marion H. I spotted her work on the prints site and I highly recommend looking through her portfolio. |

Marion: I really like the work you have posted, and the titles to your photographs are equally inspiring. |

Wow...
Thanks Mav and Journey! It's quite a high honor to mentioned along with these photographers! Marion's and Natasha's work is amazing and I really don't feel I measure up to those standards yet.. someday I will.
My personal favorite photog on this site is greenem2. I love his sense of style and light. Very very impressive stuff. |

Sweet! Thanks for the link ... another one for the watch list : )
Any chance of a deviantwatch type feature on the portfolios around here? |
