I think this is a great 'character portrait'. It looks similar to the style I use when I'm doing this sort of thing. The composition here is excellent and it tells me a nice story about the person in the photo.
I like contrasty black and whites. Your original edit looks good, but it's a little beyond where I would go with it myself in most cases.
This sort of edit is purely subjective preference though. We all like things different ways :)

Similar to jmsetzler's edit, using a bit less contrast than your submitted entry. Tried adding a bit of color too it since the b/w was too plain for my tastes. Also played a bit with the highlighted collar/sleeve so they weren't so overexposed, not that it's the neatest job though. |

I had tons of fun doing this, although of course it is useless for a challenge :-) Started with contrast masking, did some serious grunging, did a BW conversion off red channel, all in separate iterations of the of thew original. Copied each of these and added them as layers to the original, played with layer modes and opacities, then collapsed them all and did a "sketch" filter to finish it off.

I kinda like Bear's version. I can never get that sketch filter to look good on any of my images.
Here's my B&W attempt:
I used the "two hue/sat layer" method of converting to b&w (top later drops sat to 0%, second layer is set to color mode and then play with hue/sat on various channels until you like it). I liked the resulting skin tones and the shirt after I was finished with the B&W conversion.
Then I did a little bit of dodge and burn to finish it off.

As jmsetzler said, this is a great character portrait.
I did some quite heavy sharpening to bring out the texture in the man's face. Thought I'd try a different crop too to see if it would help the intensity of the image. I stayed withing editing rules I think.

I think it's interesting that all but Robt chose a B&W version (and even Robt's version incorporated it). I find it fascinating to see what others would have done.

Personally I love the high-contrast version you entered in the challenge. I find the others a bit ordinary, with the exception of Robert's, but that's not quite my taste either.

Well, that's why I started this thread...I wanted to see what others like and get a glimpse of how they look at photos. Robt did this a while back with a photo of a neighbor's baby, although it wasn't a challenge entry, if I remember correctly.
Thanks for all the feedback, so far...

There's a HELL of a lot of image manipulation happening before I applied the sketch filter on top; that's why it's working so well. I never get anything I like if I apply it to a straight image either.

That's mostly the case with any artistic filter.

Figure I play around with it. I like jmsetzler's edit so I started with that and just played around with the shadows a bit. The shadows on the hands and face especially.
