I was up in Bonnie Scotland, and I sdaw these Highland Cattle, So I thought I would get some nice close ups, Untill I started to get close !
I then thought Ineed to back off a little.
They are probobly very docile, but didnt want to chance my luck.
Whats your view - "WOULD YOU HAVE GOT CLOSER"
By the way I used a 100-400mm Zoom

when you say you got close, how close? I like getting as close as I can - but use my gut instinct and the behavior of the beast to decide when I need to back off. I try to learn about the behavior of the animal in question before I go out to shoot pics of it. You should know what body language they use to show they are agitated, angry, calm, etc. Until you know that, you did right - you backed off when your gut told you to.
Nice shots...I like the b/w one best :)

I definately would have gotten closer. They look like peaceful hippy cows to me! I really like the 4th shot. It's well framed with an interesting DOF. |

nice images. Whether you should have gotten closer or not depends mostly on how fast your reaction time and running speed are.
I was taking pictures of my brother-in-laws goat last month and he likes to rear up on his hind legs then drop down right before you. This to him is play but it can be VERY scary when you see his long, and very hard, horns coming down from about 5 feet up. He hit my camera once as I was pulling it out of the way, no damage luckily. He also like to just put his horns against your leg and push. I wasn't too worried about him hitting me too hard but I was worried about them horns getting a piece of me and doing some damage.
