I'm doing sort of a sci. fair project comparing how well a flower grows under different environmental and nutritional conditions. What would be a plant (not necessarily a flower) that's small, easy to tend to, and grows rapidly? I just need something convenient to use for the experiment.
Thanks! |

Radishes germinate and mature very quickly (30 days til maturity).
Stringbeans take longer to mature, but you might get effects on the seedlings. Good luck :) |

Yes.
I would choose something that is recognizable by most people, pretty (it does make a difference in the presentation), and something that grows fast like the radish that has already been suggested.
My primary business is tropical plants, trees, and palms. I can't think of anything in these categories that fit my descriptions above. Besides, you might not find them where you are. Instead, try going to a garden center like Home Depot or KMart and get some seeds of recognizable flowers that the packaging say grow fast. Try a couple of types for each of you experiments variable and controls and then use only the one that best illustrates the differences.
Good luck.

One thing to watch out for is that not all plants which grow quickly have seeds which germinate quickly -- read the label.
As mentioned, mung beans ("bean sprouts") will germinate in a day and will grow into recognizable forms in 2-4 days. |
