So I have this little problem. I am in my second year of college at a 4 year university, taking general ed classes... this semester consists of physical science, history, psychology, critical thinking, and world music.... all good and fine... except... I AM OVER IT!! I am so over school!!!!!!! All I want to do is take pictures! Right now, I should be completing a homework assignment for science but instead I am going through photos from this weekend and browsing DPC for inspiration. I thought that maybe in a community of photographers, others may have experienced this as well. Advice? Words of wisdom? A swift kick in the a**? Please help :) :) :)

Take some 'fun' classes inbetween the serious ones. Maybe take a photography course...then you'll have a good reason to screw off. ;-)

I can say with authority that you appreciate college much more once you've already screwed it up and it's gone. I'm on round two now, nine years after I graduated with a useless degree and a crappy GPA and it's a whole different ballgame. It would be much easier (and less costly) if I had gotten it right the first time out.

Take if from someone who left after 2 1/2 years ona 4 year degree - get the degree NOW, while you're young and free and have parents to sponge off of, i mean, to help support you.
You never know where life will take you, but having that degree, any degree really, will take you farther. statistics show the more education you have the healthier and richer you are, and you probably live longer too - which helps make up for the time spent in school LOL

Get a degree no matter what. Photography work is hard. Have few alternatives outside of photography.

Take it from another college dropout. Get your degree. Get a minor in business admin while you're at it. You'll need this if you want to get a bank to give you a big fat loan to open a studio.

Okay, Shannon, I'm gonna give you a swift kick in the a**. Taking pictures is fun. It may even end up being what you ultimately do for your life's work, but don't let it get in the way of squeezing out every drop of opportunity that's available to you in your college experience. There will be a time (and trust me on this) when you will regret not having put forth your best effort. (Really, trust me on this!) Have fun taking photos every now and then and checking in with DPC, but please KEEP YOUR PRIORITIES IN ORDER!!! At this point in your life, college is supposed to be your main priority. It will go by in the blink of an eye. Make the most of it. You will never regret setting high standards for yourself and then living up to them. Now log off and go hit those books! ;) Erin |

I never finished college for that exact reason...now I do my fair share of weddings and what not...and I have done all my learning from this and many other sites, but mainly from buying my first DSLR, 10D, and just shooting thousands of photos figuring it all out on my own time. I feel I have done a pretty good job, but would love to do some kind of internship or something, just working with other professionals and start doing photography more as my day job and not every now and then. I might finish school taking some classes over the internet just because I don't really want all that money to go to waste. Other than meeting my wife college didn't do much for me...but like I said I didn't finish so it really can't help me till I finish.

I thought you only want to have a kick out of not having to do your assignment... that's quite alright. But if you're planning to quit school for photography, that's a different story! Don't do it! |

Yeah, it'll probably be nice to be able to get a job that doesn't involve photography for a while, so you can afford to save up and buy the stuff you need to start if you want to. |
