Okay, Gateway jerked me around, and now no Fuji S602. Instead I'll be getting (I hope) a Sony F717. Can anyone tell me about filtes/lenses as they apply to this camera. What size? Is there an adapter needed?

Also, any comments on the camera itself would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Shari

58mm filters... no adapter needed...

It has 58mm lens threads, no adapter needed. If you get one, get a clear UV filter (I bought a Hoya and it's fine) to stick on the front and keep it on at all times to protect the lens. Some people say not to as it affects image quality but I haven't noticed any difference. Much nicer to scratch $20 than $600. Sony makes a few wide-angle and telephoto lenses for it, as does Raynox. Not all 58mm conversion lenses work with it, though (some will conflict with the lens position) so double-check. The Raynox ones for the F7x7 are 52mm, for example, and you need s step-up ring.

I got one a few weeks ago and I'm really happy with it. Image quality has exceeded my expectations, and the user interface is terrific. The histogram, jog-dial and buttons over menus is a great help for adjusting exposure on the fly while taking shots. I'm not super-crazy about the EVF for determining focus and such (especially in bright light) but it's nice to have the choice. The camera design doesn't really allow an optical viewfinder but that would have been nice to have to work in conjunction with the larger LCD display.

It's a great, flexible camera that allows a lot of SLR-like control and increased DOF over a smaller point-and-shoot. The lens is bright and fast and has a good zoom range and proves to be a terrific all-around tool. You'll be very happy with it should you decide to go that way.

Yes, 58... no adapter.

I've tried 3 cams (Minolta Dimage 7i, Nikon Coolpix 5000) in this price range and chose the F717. The Nikon felt like a precision instrument, fine and finecki. The Minolta felt good and square in hand. I would have had to adept some sort of viewfinder attachment, however, to be able to shield against side light. Options and modes were not what I am used to either. Images had a brownish hue to them. The Sony displayed intense reds (and some hues of purple), but felt solid/familiar in hand (and like the Dimage almost like a SLR) with good access to controls, zoom, jog wheel etc. The viewfinder has a decent eyecup on it. And (!!!) the proprietary battery lasts longer than anything else.

The camera (Sony F717) acts like a (fast) charger, so you don't have to buy one. MemoryPro sticks are available up to 1GB.
Digicams, to me, have different personalities. Depending on who you are, you may want to choose a 'compatible' one. :-)

Did any of you buy the sony wide/tele lenses. HGD0758/HGD1758
If so, have you had a problem with the weight pull barrel from the normal 90 deg angle.
Is there a fix for this, or do you have to hold it up everytime you
want to use it.

My birthday's coming up...I'm thinking VCLHGD0758. I'd like both but as I'm more interested in the landscape shots the wide-angle might suit me better. I might settle for the VCLMHG07A, as it's $300 CDN instead of $550, and I'd be able to use it with my DSC-S50 as well. Tim Jensen (timj351) of F707 fame posted some examples of shots taken with it a while back and says he loves it.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between the two Sony wide-angles. My guess is of course less chromatic aberration and distortion towards the edges of the frame. I'm kinda leaning to the better one. If you spent the money to get the good glass, why not use it?

I bought both a wide-angle and telephoto. You have to keep in mind these are "extenders" and not "true" lenses and as such I'd recommend holding onto your money for the next generation.

My experience is that images often come out a little washed out, but otherwise it is a good camera. It has a lot of range by digital standards.

Until true affordable 35mm detectors come along with better lenses and view finders, digital is going to remain second fiddle to emulsion-based cameras in overal quality. They are already far superior in image processing and sharing images, of course.

I would recommend an additional high-capacity battery and memory sticks. I've seen the new 256 Meg ones that work with the F717 at just over $100.

I don't have these lenses, but I do have an Olympus B-300 which I use with my F707. And yes, I do have to support the lens barrel part of the camera when the teleconverter is attached.

But as I always use the camera like this anyway (and I think that was how it was designed to be used) that isn't a problem for me.
