Can someone explain to me what a hot pixel on a SLR camera is?
Is it the same as a dead pixel on an LCD monitor? |

| It's a pixel or group of them that gets stuck on a certain color/value, it usually happens on long exposures when the sensor heats up. The camera's noise reduction can usually clean them up from the file. |

| So its a hardware fault susceptible to all DSLR's, but is it detremental? |

| I have gotten them on occasion but they don't really repeat on mulitple images. I usually just clone the spot out. |

No, I don't consider it detrimental. You can remap your sensor and that should fix it. Some dSLR's have the ability to do it them selves (I think Olympus) and others you have to have a technician do it.
If I am wrong, someone feel free to correct me
And as was stated, it's easy to clone out (provided it's not a basic editing challenge)

It's not just on DSLR sensors but on all digital camera sensors. |

Even then one or two pixels isn't going to be that noticable at 640 resolution. So, it's not that big of an issue.

I agree, but sometimes they are so bright they are visible on all pictures. I just cured my brand new EOS 400D (XTi) - saves me going and get it replaced (with a model that just has other hot pixels ...)
For Canon Rebel XT/XTi cameras, see for instance //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=448711 (EOS info starting around the 10th post)
