So, last week, I was shooting a local little league football game. I had my son, Travis, (age 4.5) in tow with me. At some point, I had my sister's rebelxt (actually, it is her boyfriend's) and my rebel. My son wanted to take some pictures, so I gave him the xt. He did pretty good. I showed him how to hold it and where to press (to which he responded, "I KNOW!"), and told him to have at it. I would post some of his pics, but little sis has them. :)

For kids, the basic rule is, "You have to have the strap around your neck." I see you are following this rule (that's good). Too young is when the camera drags on the floor hanging from the kid's neck.

This is his first experience with an dslr. :) He's actually been taking pictures for over a year, now. I don't know if I have any of his on the web or not. We let him use our sony dsc-s30.
Even Kristi (18 mos) likes to play. We have an ultra .3mp cheapo plastic thing that she puts up to her face and pretends to take pictures.
We definitely encourage it!

My granddaughter has been shooting with my D70 from day one. First on a tripod and now on her own.
At first she would just shoot as if there was no tomorrow (as many grown-ups do at all times :) ) but now (she'll be 6 in December) she aims and takes a good look at the frame. When we are out together and she is more or less supposed to be my model, she is very adamant in telling me that it is her turn now. If not, I have no model :)
If they can hold it, let them have it. But use a strap. Rebekka has it round her neck, the 24-85 is a bit heavy. If it's a p&s, they have a wrist strap. If they are small, they are maybe not all that good at co-ordinating. Looking through the viewer, keeping the finger on the shutter AND holding it steady is not easy for small people. A tripod is a good idea for a tiny beginner.

definately never too young our daughter(5) now has been taking pictures for a couple years. we have a few sort of low POV day in the life of Odyssey collections. lots of cats and lots of her brother but very cute. she has ides for photos all the time. we cant do tham all like for some reason she wants to hang that cats from a bar like they are doing pull-ups. thats her big grand idea(doesnt sound humane to me though.lol). but she has creative ideas all the time. she just last week did a shoot showing the process of cooking her macaroni and cheese. lol she said about a stopped motion shot of me pouring the powdered cheese on... "Now THIS would win a macaroni challenge" they'd vote 100'S!." lol |

Katia's self portrait. She set the camera on the table, set the self-timer, pushed the shutter, and ran over into the pose. |

Well - Tori is 2 and she takes her own photos with my D70 all the time. Shes my best friends little girl. I have to brace the camera for her - but she set up the Rhinopterloptorous photo on her own and made me take the pic. Shes not very good when she does it herself, but it thrills her to pieces.
Um, then theres AJ, K and C who are 7 (this week) and 5 respectively. They are my kids and I bought all three of them cheapy digital cameras for our Disney trip. They were actually snobby about cameras enough to scorn the quality and beg to use the d70.
And of course I have kryta who is 10.
I have a 1 year old stepfosterkid and shes too young - she prefers to poke at the lenses and chew on my lightsphere. :)

I have photos from the inside of my mother's womb. It was challenging because of the poor lighting, but it was a good start :)
My dad had a darkroom in the house growing up, so I took an interest in grade school and never put the camera down since! |

My daughter was 5 here and she had great time playing the fashion/glamour photographer
And she's the boss now with my A70. My wife and me trust her to take shots of us even with the 350D. Oh, makes me proud!

my wife and I have been debating giving our 6 year old daughter a camera. Actually she already has one of those barbie digital cameras which take actual photos but only work outside in bright conditions,
We are thinking about giving her our Olympus C3040 not to care for but to take photos with, learn how to frame shots etc,, I believe after reading this thread we are indeed going to allow her to use that camera. Not really a huge loss if she drops it or anything. My only concern is that camera has a major issue with having to remove the lens cap before you turn on the camera. Something I am affraid the kid will not take in to thought each time she turns the camera on. I guess Ill have to make sure that the cap stays off while in her hands.
