So sorry... I also know how it feels. You will always miss him, but the memories are something to hold onto.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Sounds like he had four great years he may not otherwise have had, due to your kindness. That will always be treasured. It's never easy, though, you did what was best.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.
- Anatole France

I know very well that Max will live forever in your memories and your heart. He was so very lucky to find his place there!

Rest peacefully, Max. The lives of our treasured companions are too short. You did a good thing for a good pup, Linda, and he will live on in your lovely photos.

Everyones kind words here mean a lot. I bet Max feels your love right now too. Out of all my gang I think Penny and Beanie are missing him most. Penny wanders doggie bed to doggie bed trying to sense/feel him there (she's blind), and Beanie has searched all his favorite spots he would go to when he wanted to get away and be alone. She did this a few times last night. The other thre are acting like their usual selves.

ShutterPug,
As you sadly are currently going through this....
Do you have any advice on consoling a dog who has just lost his buddy (dog)....On Monday, My sister and husband lost their 17yr old Golden Lab mix, Bailey. It took until today for Cahill to finally realize that Bailey must not be coming home. He is really sad. Any advice what to do for him?

They are trying to keep the routines up as usual.

I am so sorry to have read all the thread on Max....he was a lucky dog to have spent his best years with you!

Generally the suggestion my vet gave was to give the surviving pets extra love and attention. I t not only will help them, but also will help the humans in the family as they focus on life instead of the loss suffered. I made a point of doing the special things each of mine likes to get their minds off focus from the loss. Like Napoleon who loves car rides, Beanie who loves going on walks, Penny who loves nothing more than to be on my lap for extended periods of time, etc.
One thing for your sis to keep in mind is that if she gets another dog, the surviving pet may not accept him/her immediately as they sense this as a replacement. But over time they too should form a bond if their personalities are compatible.
Sorry to hear of your sister's loss - it is never easy, even with the senior pets.

So sorry for your loss - you're in my thoughts. I do as much volunteer work as possible for local rescues and the Humance Society, and it always fills my heart with joy to hear of a wonderful dog like Max finding such a loving companion to live out his life with. I've been in your shoes and know its hard. Hugs to you.
