Thanks for the help!
I want to do better but I need insight.
I did not like the lower right corner but did not know how to get rid of it without cropping and I was afraid to crop a lot.
Advise on improving this image?

I gave it a 7. I really liked it. And the score might not have been what you were looking for, but you got 2 favorites out of it. That's quite an accomplishment. And I think the comments you recieved have a lot of insightfulness to them. Nothing more that I could really add.

hmm 5.7 is a pretty good score, do you think you could add some more editing steps? To me everything looks really good, I probably would have given this a six. I do think the cactus in the bottom corner are a bit distracting, so that would involve maybe a different angle on a reshoot.
I croppped some of the left off of the left side since it was a bit of dead space and it put the cactus running down a vertical third. Also I oversharpened the image then ran a thick gaussian blur around 8 pixels and then faded it back. I think with the subject you chose it did really well, hard to come up with what else to improve the shot, the colors are great.
Edit: not sure this is any better than your entry, just a different take :)

This photo has a lot going for it - composition, colors, excellent separation of the subject from the background... I think the main problem was choosing a cactus as a subject for a "soft focus" photo. A cactus is not associated in most minds with a soft focus (think babies, romance, horsies, flowers, lush landscapes, furry animals and such) . Cactus photo should be rasor sharp (which it isn't because you apparently went for a softer look). So here is it's inner contradiction which might have affected the score, IMO

Couldn't agree more. This photo begs to be sharp. Probably would have done better sharp and in the right challenge. |

I am not complaining about the score. I am ok with it. I just want to learn how to get consistent 6+ scores and how to improve the quality of images.
I really liked my picture and thought that maybe it was ironic that cactus was presented as soft. Kind of a twist. I don't know ;-)
I am asking because I want to improve as a photographer and was pleased with the editing and composition (except for the right corner).
I spent a very lovely day walking around a local botanical garden and really really enjoyed myself while taking pictures. This image was one of the best and I loved the colors.
What really matters is that I thoroughly enjoyed the day taking pics and was happy with my shot...always want to improve though!
Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

Isn't taking the pics for yourself the most important thing? (Unless you taking them for a client, then they have to be pleased.)
Happy for ya! |

Exactly what I thought when I saw this photo in voting. I loved the shot (especially the wonderful colors!!!) but was thinking that it was a bit out of place in the soft focus challenge. |
