If someone was going to go to the trouble of removing the cord, they would have removed all of it. Those cables are stiff and if she was just slightly moving the top around 6-8 inches the bottom would barely move. I have achieved similar images with my daughters concerts. Im pretty certain its motion blur. But it sure was fun to laugh at for a while.

Yeah but they had such a hard time with what they already did can you image how the floor would look if they tried to clean it up? lol

Looking more closely, I agree with sea2c and Bear_Music that it is probably motion blur.

I say it's motion blur. The slight darkening caused by the cord won't show up in detailed areas. The hands of the tall guy with are also blurred, so he must have been clapping. I doubt someone who managed to clone a face back into the photo would do such a sloppy job on the featureless wall.

I hope you do, too..as much as I respect the big ole Bear, I really think it is bad editing.

I thought bad clone at first, then a second glance , it is motion blur.
The bottom part is not blured for 1 of 3 reasons, 1 it did not move, 2 Better light/flash froze it while higher up poor lighting let it blur, 3 whip effect, the motion had not travled to that point in the cord yet, but is motion blur
edit here is a shot I took the other day with a similar effect as an example

Guys! Go back and check the pic. I think there's a face cloned in too... look!
I agree about the motion blur too.

Dude! I can sooo see the second shooter on the grassy knoll.

Actually I agree those faces look familiar. But, boy, the counterargument that it makes no sense the dude was good enough to clone in that face and bad enough to clone the cord on the blank wall.

Perhaps it was a screen calibration effect? We've all seen bad clone jobs due to screen limitations.

I am really pissed off that this poorly edited piece of manipulation is in MSNBC's This Week in Pictures for 08/24 to 08/31/2006. I would have been almost all right with it if they had noted the faulty editing but nothing. MSNBC

Robert! They added an Editor's note...Saying that "The microphone appearing to disappear in certain areas is a result of a slow shutter speed and is not electronic manipulation"
Hmmm...OK...

I was just on the MSNBC site and guess what photo shows up? That's right, the "missing microphone cord" photo.

However, there is a disclaimer (Editor's Note), see image below. . .
