CS2 with Camera RAW plugin. As you said, it's faster, relatively precise and easier to work with.

I use RAW Essentials, which is still available for the moment. I use the free version. I find it compatible with what I need to do. I do tweaking in RAW, convert to Tiff and then import into PS.

Which Canon Utility? ZoomBrowser or Canon DPP? ZB is a bit tedious but Digital Photo Professional works fine... either case make make sure you have the updated versions from the canon site... there were a lot of changes to ZoomBrowser since I picked up my 20D (1.5 year ago).

ED: to answer the question...I use Canon Digital Photo Professional v2.(something), why? because it is a nice interface, quick, effective and best of all was free with the cam.

Photo Mechanic is the organizer and viewer of choice for most of the pros I know that handle thousands of photos every day.
It will handle the traditional Raw-Jpeg format so much faster it will blow your mind. |

Another Rawshooter Essensials user here.
I also have the Raw editor for Photoshop CS2, but find that RS Essentials is quicker and easier to use.
You had better download the free version while you can because Adobe have just bought the company out, and have announced that once there verion is released the free stuff will be removed.
I just got the full version off a UK magazine for nothing but you can download it here

| Capture One Pro because I like the raw conversion best of anything I've tried (especially how you can manipulate white balance). That said, it is not exactly workflow friendly as you have to dump out 16 bit tiffs and then open them in photoshop. It's nice in cs2 to have everything within the same app and I use that when I don't care for the hassle. but when it counts, I use Capture One. |

Almost always CS2 with ACR. Fast, straightforward, works great.
I do use RSE for batches, but that's about it. |

I use the software that came with my canon as well as GIMP (a stripped down free linux/open source photoshop like program)

Canon's DPP - digital photo pro, free from canon. tutorial is at //photoworkshop.com/canon/ Works great for correction, sorting, cropping (trimming) and RAW conversion. I can take 1000 RAW files ffrom a wedding, scan all at full size for sharpness (missed focus, motion blur are the issues i want to find), sort out those bad ones. Then WB them, correct exposure, pick or change picture styles as needed, crop most of them and be ready to convert in under 2 hours.
conversion happens while i am busy doing something else - be it in the background on teh computer or while i have dinner or sleep, etc.
I then use Breezebrowser pro to make web galleries for proofing or sale, or to make 200DPI 4x6 files for printing proofs. BBPro can also convert the RAW file and can sort, etc too. |

Thanks for pointing this out, Chris. I never thought of looking for a tutorial on how to use DPP effectively, but instead have been figuring it out on my own. This will definitely speed up the learning process! :D |
