It has been a long time since the newest terrorist scare, and it looks like airlines may ban all carry on luggage. I just realized that this would mean camera equipment too. Every year my family travels to san juan, puerto rico, and the last airport we arrive at is a tiny, somewhat sketchy airstrip in Boqueron. If I have to check my bags, and leave them unlocked, what confirmation do i have that my $4000 worth of camera equipment and laptop will be in the bags when i get there?

What airline?
Even BA (which was banning carryon all together when the even happened) is allowing a briefcase size carryon. All other airlines I've checked, (Air Canada, Northwest and KLM) have the standard (pre-event) carryon restrictions. The only thing banned across the board currently is liquids, gels and creams.
Check the airline website for restrictions. |

Check the link. These are homeland security approved locks. Airport security has a coded key for use with these locks so they can open them. |

we can't use locks either. AND, what if someone who works as a screener is dishonest?

A quick and easy (but by no means fool proof) deterrent are either those plastic loop tie thingies (I don't konw what they are called!) because they can be cut off or twist ties. I use twist ties. Your bag is not locked, but it's a little bit of a deterrent for someone who is trying to work quickly to search your bag and steal things.

Since the airline takes no responsibility for checked luggage, that's what insurance is for. |

right, but insurance is expensive, and unless i can insure it for 20 grand, i'm not going to be happy when my equipment isn't there even if i know i will get new stuff.

a) homeowner's insurance
b) yes, you can use those locks. I have done it before with no problems.

There's only so much you can do. Maybe suing the airport for having criminal baggage handlers would be an option . |

Perhaps you should contact the airline/airports ahead of time and ask what their policies are and what they recommend and what their policies have to say about theft of items and what your (and their) rights and legal responsibilities would be in that situation.
It may also be a good idea to look into mailing/shipping the items to your hotel instead of carrying them on the plane.

And once one of these keys falls into the hands of a thief, what happens then? Still gives me the eebie-jeebies...

From what I read in the Lonely Planet guide to Kenya, ~30% of residents of Nairobi reported being mugged in the last year. (That percentage may be a bit higher)

I am traveling soon and am having the same fears. I thought about possibly SHIPPING my stuff (insured for amount) to where I'm going if I cannot carry on. It might be expensive, not sure...but you'd have a little more piece of mind. |
