could someone tell me what settings they use for saving images for challenges

the default setting on my editor is 72 pixels per inch - up to now i had assumed that this was standard and that to go lower would harm the image

but it gives me a maximum length of about 9 inches in order to get the thing within the challenge rules - and someone has put that my current entry is too small in the comments

many people's pictures come up much larger including some really detailed colour shots so i'm curious about what ppi settings they use

PPI has nothing to do with displaying photos on a computer screen. It only matters when printing. Only actual pixels are important for web-viewing.

As Ben has stated, you only need to worry about the pixel dimensions and for challenges, also the file size.

640 on the longest side (unless otherwise stated) and file size of 150k (unless otherwise stated).

i might be being stupid here ... but here goes

my editing program saves on a default of 72 ppi

last challenge i set the long side to just under 9 inches to get inside 640 pixels on the long side

but it comes up quite small on the challenge screen

how do i go about making my image appear bigger on the screen for challenges ?

Which editor are you using Roger?

Go to your entry and right click over the image then select properties. What are the pixel dimensions indicated? If your image appears small on the screen the pixel dimensions shown will be less than the max allowed for challenges.

Here are the Photoshop Instructions.

If you are using an editor other than Photoshop, post the editor - perhaps someone can help with instructions that are equivalent.
