Originally posted by mk: I'm aware of this thread only because a number of DPCers with whom I chat (yes, when I want to have discussion interesting to only a select few and completely unrelated to photography, I use a chatroom or instant messenger). I've intentionally been away from DPC for about a week and plan (with the exception of these instances in which I can't contain myself) to stay that way. This isn't a "boohoo, look at me quit and feel sorry for me" post...it's just to say add me to the list of squeaky wheels.
I've been at DPC for a long time. I've seen it through many stages. I've always been a proponent of off-topic conversation, although not being privvy to the SC threads, you might not see that. But for me, recently, DPC has gotten so ridiculous that it's not even worth my time anymore. It's not that there are worthwhile yet off-topic threads. It's that people can't seem to help themselves from posting just for the sake of posting. It's that people can't seem to find the line and stay on the proper side of it. I just don't understand it. Threads like "pillow fight" and "off topic" aren't promoting social activity - a good number of the posts in those threads don't even contain real words. I don't understand the need to have these sorts of conversations "immortalized" on a photography site and why they can't take place in private, the way many of us conduct our nonsensical and competely-uninteresting-to the-general-public conversations.
Likewise, I'm absolutely not a prude. But honestly, I can only stomach so much discussion about whips and leather and who blatently wishes they were banging whom. Why does this have to be so prevalent in the forums? And not just in their own threads (of which there are many), but in any thread that happens to pop to the top when a certain group of people are online. I just see absolutely no reason why this needs to be conducted in public.
I am all for informative, interesting, off-topic threads. But these, I just don't understand.
And I completely understand that my post and my opinion don't change a single thing. I've mentioned before, as politely as my crusty self can muster, that this sort of degeneration has been bothering me, only to be mocked. I'm aware that our opinions mean little and that unless the SC essentially comes in with brute force, our requests won't be honored. But I know that the ones who have spoken up here aren't nearly the number who have been bothered by this so I just wanted to add another name to the list of those who have. Good luck to everyone in finding a suitable balance. |
Just bumping mk's post so people see that since I started a new page with my post.

The real issue here is there aren't enough people creating photography threads OR responding to them. Maybe that's where the effort should be focused at instead of just complaining. |
just to point something out here, 7 of the 10 threads on my screen right now are about photography or directly related to it. I will agree with you though, we do need more responses going into photography related threads then threads about pillow fights and such... |

I think yanko's statement highlights the differences people have in viewing DPC.
I am set at 1680 x 1050 and with my preferences.. I get almost 4 times as many "pages" of information before the thread actually rolls to another page.
I also see about 30 threads deep on my front page so I guess my point...some people are not as affected by all the "off-topic" threads as others. I literally have not EVER been put off by excessive forum "off-topic" activity.
But..people with lower resolutions and smaller screens might be more affected. That is why I think Bears idea ..or any idea..that better manages the front page for people with limited real estate might alleviate some of the concerns I see here.

If it's only a handful of users who post to the "inappropriate" threads and the MAJORITY of people have no interest in them then I don't see the problem.
They die off quickly aren't really seen because the MAJORITY of the users have higher morals and fill the site with photography-only related postings, right?
No?
It seems to me the threads are always "on top" because they are immensely popular with the site. If you really think it's only 2 or 3 people "spamming" the site over and over again to bring their threads to the top then perhaps you should take a closer look at the posters of those "deviant" threads, you might just find more users than you think.
I'm not 15 nor would I give all the money in the world to be 15 again. I'm perfectly happy being an adult. I enjoy "talking" to other adults with similar interests and similar senses of humor. That's not to say everyone is the same as me but it's fair to say that a LARGE GROUP of people are like me and DO have similar interests.
Who ever said this site is strictly for learning how to be a better photographer? I hear that a lot but as far as I can tell this is a game site. We all enter in a photo each week in competition against each other. If you're here to become a better photographer then good for you! Some of us are here for the camaraderie as well though. If this site was all about the dry technicals of photography I (and many others) wouldn't be here.
I keep hearing about "inappropriate content" but I don't recall anyone having cyber sex on the forums. I don't recall threads full of people "showing their nipples". I haven't heard about any pictures being removed from the threads recently for explicit sexual content. What is inappropriate? I don't have a problem speaking to MY mother about sexual topics - but then I'm not 15, I'm an adult just like my mother. Where would the line be drawn? Why should people have to go to a different site to enjoy the humor of other posters? I want to talk to other people who enjoy photography and games (contests) and I don't think it's realistic to ask people to only speak of photography and contests in an forum such as this. I have friends here. |

I will try to refrain from thread hijacking - I'm sorry if I had offended anyone with my hijacks.
But I will continue posting non-photography related stuff in the Rants and/or the General Discussion forums, because I have the need to be not-so-serious sometimes.
Amen.
EDIT: Time to make this official? Create a vote:
1. current forums condition is comfortable
2. forums should only tolerate photography related stuff
3. forums should not be moderated by SC/admin, but members moderate themselves
4. hijacks should not be tolerated
5. off-topics of any sort should be allowed in Rant/ General Discussion
take your pick... :)

I would readily support a proposal of this nature. I simply cannot get myself to agree with those that advocate what can best be described as censorship.
It may be that I am somewhat selective in my choice of threads, but of those that I do read, there is nothing contained therein that I would want restricted.
Are there threads that I don't care for...Absolutely... and I tend not to peruse the contents of those, regardless of the caption. I do know what I like, and I tend to forego those things I don't care for, and certainly do not need anyone else to do for me.

Quoting Bear because want to highlight his concern.
He has valid points. Maybe, here is a suggestion that might work for everyone:
For all new members, the main page will be DEFAULT to exclude the General Discussion and Rants. Members can later change their setting so that the main page include those if they wish. What do you think? Maybe we can win half the battle by doing this. Thanks. |

Hehe...i_enjoy_ham...before I go to sleep..I just want for the record that I will gladly support any functional changes that will make DPC a better site for you and others.
I do not and will never support any form of censorship. I know this is unrealistic, especially as it pertains to private sites, as DPC is. But, in for a penny ..in for a pound. Meaning if I were to give in slightly just to help a few people then I might as well not have an opinion about it at all.
I am sure, with all the web-building talent here at DPC...there will be a technical solution that helps both camps..the heathens (like me) and the non-heathens, have a site that meets their needs.
And with that "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night." |

Not sure tech is needed, we just need to learn to co-exist.

you don't resolve something site-wide only with a private discussion among the few of you - please share us some details. I'd like to know what happened, who got hurt, who was prosecuted, and who got the remaining cheese. Thanks.

agreed, this makes it seem like this ENTIRE THREAD was all about Leroy and if so then I don't know why the private discussion didn't happen in the first place. |

This is an issue that, from what I have been able to gather in this thread, is a Site problem involving many people. With that said I prefer to discuss such matters ON the site.
I'm glad that you (I Enjoy Ham) have been able to work out an agreement with Leroy that makes you both happy. However unless this was just a personal problem with Leroy (which again, if that's the case should have been handled privately) then I do not see how this issue has been resolved in any way shape or form.
Furthermore I do not see how having an online discussion with a few individuals in chat while YOU are available is going to solve the issue. I understand you started this thread but you started it as a problem with this SITE.
I don't see how anything has actually been resolved (unless this was an issue just between you and Leroy). |

F&%$ off!... just kidding:)
our conversation with leroy went like this, there was some cursing and biting, and kicking but in the end we broke it down to three main points...
1. We don't suck...
2. Leroy and the "others" dont suck
3. We kissed and made up and we hope all of you can too, we didnt mean for this to turn into a huge argument :)
however ofr those of you who still wish to discuss this as i said before we can be found most of the time in the dpc fanatics chat here
please feel free to keep posting and we will post back :)
(oh, and mk wants some snacks)

ok, so let the site bring on any issues they have with me. What issues do you have, that leroy came into the chat seeking to speek with us. He took initiative and you didnt? if anyone protests the resolution that leroy has come up with like i said, i am more then happy to discuss it further with them and work it out.
edit to add i would LIKE to keep this site wide, leroy came to us seeking for a resolution so we came up with something...

This is an excellent point.
Some of the stuff that came up wasn't appropriate for a Google-searchable forum thread though.
In any conflict resolution, you have to start somewhere. It looks like the resolution was started between Leroy and Dan (kudos to Leroy for being brave enough to withstand the Fray). Dan's invited anyone who wants to come to Fanatics and discuss specifics, so that no one else feels singled out with specifics.
I do think that how much off-topic banter and where it is placed on the front page is worthy of further discussion. :)

I think the issue here is neither you or Leroy speak for the community at large. Also you saying it's "resolved" because a few people, Leroy included came to an understanding/agreement is to prove what some have hinted at, which is really this is just a private issue you and others had with Leroy and nobody else. If not then why else would you consider the matter resolved? There are several others that are very sexual in nature at this web site so I'm guessing maybe the real issue here is that he's a guy and well he isn't a super model? No offense Leroy. :P
