Dan...if you are 15 I will give you the benefit of the doubt about internet experience versus mine.
Suffice it to say...I think you may be going a bit far in your desire to restrict DPC.
I don't read a lot of the stuff that seems to be getting people here upset. And I hang out here ALOT...I just have a hard time believing things have gottn that bad ..based on my perspective..to warrant this kind of concern. |

The real issue here is the way we are constructed: we have a front page that continually updates with threads that are actively posted to. The frivolous threads, the social threads, are very active. Indeed, we've had threads int he past whose sole purpose was to drum up activity and stay on the front page as long as possible. Every one of these threads is "stealing space" from some other thread.
Now, without getting into whether they are good or bad, or deserve to be perpetual front-pagers, we can all probably agree that if by chance the 30 most active threads were all social, this would be a bad thing, right? I mean, we ARE a photography site, and useful, informative threads actually DIE because they slide off the front page too rapidly and people checking in "later" never come across them. It's been proven time and again on the internet that most people cruising a site don't go past the front page, that they are just trying to catch up.
If we can structure it so the social stuff has its own "box", at the bottom of the page, in which it follows its own refresh cycle and does not impact the "useful content" priority list at all, surely this would be seen as a good thing by everyone? I can't believe anyone is taking the position that if enough people want to engage in chitchat, we should just let it push the photography off the list?
And there IS that little matter of how we appear to others; if someone sent YOU to this site saying this is a great place for photography, and you clicked into a few of these totally inconsequential social mosh pits, don't you think you might be inclined to look for someplace a little more serious or professional? I think that's really bad. And I'm personally aware of at least 10 valued, skilled members who almost never visit the forums any longer because they find them so screwed up with nonsense and inanity.
We need PROPORTION here, people!

yeah, the majority, who is that again? people keep saying that the majority are for this removal of all things non-photographic or whatever this is, but I have yet to see more than 5 total people support the OP even in this thread...
I think the sex stuff needs to be dealt with when it pops up, as with anything against forum rules. The tone here seems to be asking for a bit further than that, and that's just silly. Why kill all community on this site? How are people supposed to get to know each other?
Asking people to chat offsite kind of defeats the purpose of a forum...

I agree with your basic idea Bear...
I never understood why ALL topics were lumped on the front page anyway. It does push stuff around.
If there was a better way to segregate the threads so people could keep an eye on topics that interested them that would be good for everyone on both sides of this issue. |

Yah. And we could STILL deal with inappropriate content in whatever manner seemed warranted int he new section; it wouldn't be nay more of a free-for-all than what we have now, the same rules would still apply and, possibly, the same lines would have to be drawn..

things have gotten that bad though, its hard to go through the from page of threads without coming across some off topic banter, that hi-jacks the thread. The reason for the thread is in the OP and if your not responding to that or something similiar to that it should be in a different thread. |

Seriously though, we need room for all people here....the 15 year olds, the grandmas, the sadomasochistic..whatever...Just find a way so people can figure out where their "clique" is at and get to those post easily....
Heck..all this forum rules stuff probably pushed the Sado thing right off my front page..now I gotta go digging for it!

There is a lot of crap on TV that I don't like. Am I gonna try and get it taken it off TV so that I don't have to see it? No. I just change the channel. There is a lot of stuff in magazines that I don't like. Am I gonna try and get those publications taken off of the shelves? No, I just don't buy those magazines. There are a lot of music on the radio that I don't like. Am I gonna try and get that music banned? No, I just don't listen to those stations. There is a lot of stuff that I don't like that goes on in the forums. Am I gonna try and get that stuff removed? No, I just ignore it...

It was with great astonishment, and then horrified revulsion that I happened by chance to click on page 24 of the "Get Off Topic" thread, only to find Judi and your very own self discussing what could reasonably be considered sexual deviant proclivities. I can't even quote the multiple posts on that topic here, for fear of offending normal, rational people.
I admit it. I reported your post. I begged SC to remove it. When nothing happened, I was extremely disappointed and wrote chapter and verse about the sorry status of DPC when such topics were allowed on our very front page, that new visitors see and judge our site by. It was then that it was moved to Rant.
To be fair, I can't take all the credit. I was told that numerous other people complained about the same and similar posts, including those made by other people. When I heard that, it didn't surprise me in the least.
So, Leroy, consider this is a formal request: Won't you please stop polluting DPC with your sexual deviance and related fantasies.

Sorry to stick my foot in this door.....
But before we continue talk about censoring people on the forums, could we perhaps consider what the original poster *suggested*?
What I'm saying is, he seems to be asking (and rather politely) for a favor from fellow DPCers. He's stating a concern and asking if you would be kind enough to consider his feelings and the feelings of others....and I don't see the harm in that.
If you feel that you *have* considered the feelings of others and still wish to make a thread, then at least you've honestly considered those feelings involved...yours and the others who comprise this site.
I just hate to see things degenerate so rapidly into SC action, new side-sites, banning of topics in the forums, etc. when perhaps a little bit of self control or concern for others would do the trick! :-)
