I think that a lot of the banter and innuendo-talk that has been going on in the threads lately would be more appropriate for a private chatroom or something like that, but not here in the forums.
This is just my personal position though. |
Well said, Ursula! My sentiments exactly! Keep the sexual innuendoes and pillow fights in other places PLEASE! |

You know, even if you made a chat room especially for "that" - someone would manage to complain about it. |
Sorry toots... but if there was a place for the adult type of fun that would go on there... the complaints would be about the fact that no one would go there..

Even THIS thread feels sort of hijacked to me... It's dwelling almost exclusively on the "sexual innuendo" component, but the OP had this to say:
Over the past couple of months i have watched the degredation of the dpc forums. There have been posts about whisky, a pillow fight, pancakes, and definitely worst of all the sex threads. Anyway, this is not a rant, im not gonna list the off topic threads that have been made (yes, there was even one called "Get Off Topic"). I am going to ask that a line be drawn.
I'm in complete agreement with him. I feel like the forums are being flooded with trivial, inconsequential banter and chit-chat, and that this is crowding out the useful content that I fell in love with when I first found the site and joined. I'm not a prude, I'm not without humor, but I don't like the way this LOOKS. For me, the long-term health of DPC will be determined by how it continues to attract serious participants, people who want to learn and teach. I believe that when a casual visitor enters the site and scans the front-page threads, they are getting a poor impression of the site.
I have suggested that a way around the problem might be to create a whole, second forum that would be devoted to social interaction, with various different boards in it just like we have now, and that this forum could be in its own box lower on the page than the photography forums and so forth that are the reason for the site. That way the top of the page would be continually updated "serious" content, and down at the bottom would be a whole second set of updated "social" content. This way, no amount of activity in the social, rant, and frivolous threads could drive the photography content off the front page.
I don't want anyone to get me wrong here; I believe in free speech and all that; I just wish we could take steps to segregate the two functions so that those who are here primarily to teach and learn (the real purpose of the site) will not have to hunt for content.
Robt.

even if someone did complain, theres nothing that will happen, its not associated with dpc, just most of the people in it are from here. |

Simple solution...
1st...Add another forum for people to get a bit more "adult" without turning triple xxx...
and make that one where you have check a box to agree that you are 18 and older.
2nd...smack the hands of abusive thread-Hijackers.
But allowing any one set of people to severely restrict discussions between adults because the topic may get "Adult Only" oriented seems a bit ...I don't know...but it feels funny :-/ |

its not the adult orriented part thats bothersome.. its the fact that this is a photography website, and that stuff just doesnt belong here.. period.

Would you consider sadomasochism a Triple X topic? I do. |

I'm completely, 100% against the sub-18/over-18 division.
I think the 18 age for 'maturity' in this culture is ridiculous, and besides, there are a lot of members who are over 18 who would be terribly offended by things that some of the under-18 crowd wouldn't mind at all.
If you seperate anything, don't seperate it by age. Bear_Music's idea for preventing the home page from getting cluttered with general discussion is good - how about a seperate 'Community' link and a 'Photography discussion' link on the menubar, in which the Community one covers General Discussion, Rant, etc, and the photography discussion covers everything else? |

if your going to smack the abusers.. get to it ... give them a 1 month ban from the forums.. maybe that will get the point across... then add a month for each time they go off again ..

Ummm..Welcome to the internet :-D
I am a member of many professional photography sites and most allow discussion far outside the realm of photography.
I think turning DPC into a "PHOTO ONLY ZONE" ignores the fact we have humans here. |

It's an extension of what I suggested earlier, but at least Robert has a much better chance that someone will actually READ what he had to say.
I totally agree with him. There is ROOM and NEED for both photographic and social interaction on DPC.
It would be nice to keep the serious threads on topic, yet be able to interact without constantly being censored. |

the thing is that people come here to learn about the art of photography, at your professional photography sites the people already know how to take photos, they arnt interested in a photo based community, they are interested in a regualar community. |

Leroy, I think a big point of his is that the banter and fun threads are taking up too much first page real estate.
If the front page was separated into two distinct forum sections, that wouldn't happen.
Edited to fix spelling.

OMG
yes it needs censoring... the behavior of a few ... do not need to be inflicted on the majority... and it still seems the majority is saying they dont want to adult content or the inane thread hijacking in DPC forums

Absolutely....people interact with people with similar interests. That is just the way the world works....you want to talk to people who have similar hobbies and stuff.
I think we should encourage MORE interaction..but I agree with Bear...we probably need a more effective way for people to partition the forum topics on the front page.

Um, it's the lack of censorship that was the main thrust of the original post.
With that said, I'm not sure many people really want no social interaction whatsoever. It does seem clear that many users wish certain types of interaction to take place elsewhere.
I suggest MySpace. There's even a DPChallenge group all set up over there. |

if the front page was split into two sections then the site would turn into "dpc... and other random things" and thats NOT what it should be! |

actually we are trying to eliminate the imaprpriate banter by drawing a line, we dot want to take the fun out, we just want to keep the focus on photography |
