ok...sorry for all these questions.
I'm just about to enter an order at b&h for a photo backpack (went for the Crumpler, yikes) and protective filters for my new lenses.
There's a battery in my cart right now, but is it really necessary? I mean, 600+ shots seems PLENTY to me....has anyone ever ran out of juice in 1 day of shooting on a full charge?
thanks again for helping out a newbie with too many questions. |

I would have two, what if one stops working or you forget to charge it?

get 2!
with 2 you indeed have an eternity to shoot, because WHEN one goes dead, you just throw the other on the charge and keep switching them back and forth. Also good insurance in case you forgot to charge one or didn't reaize it was so low when you go out to shoot. Seriously, it isn't THAT much money (especially when it isn' mine... hehe) and really could make your life better. I have 2 batteries and I even got a battery grip so I can even throw in AA's if I need to. I often go on "walkabout" and don't get around electricity for several days.

I have 3 batteries. 2 in the grip and one spare incase I run out. I can get about 1000 or more photos with the grip and 2 batteries, but I dont want to take a chance.

Get SterlingTek instead of Canon OEM batteries. They are cheaper and perform much better.

I have 3 generic batteries, and the original Canon one (a full spare set for my camera with the battery grip)
I'd say it's worth the savings to get the generic ones, although the first time I was shooting with the Sterlingtek battery, it went from 3 dots to absolutely dead in like 40-50 shots - I've been able to squeeze more than 100, and spread out over an hour, out of 2 dots with the Canon battery.
EDIT: I did get a good amount of use (probably 300 shots at 3 dots) out of it before it went dead though, the indicator might have been a little screwy because it wasn't broken in yet.

My SterlingTek batteries (2 in the grip on the 20d) have about doubled my shooting life...

I have 3 batteries also. Definitely need at least 2. One will not last a full day of shooting.

I have five batteries, 2 Canon (one came with each camera) and 3 generic from Sterlingtek.
Lots of extra batteries are good, especially if travelling to an area where power is iffy at best and recharging is not an option. |

Get two. I've run two batteries dry in one weekend of shooting with no access to power. So the moral of my story is really get at least two - I needed three.

| I have 2 batteries in my grip and can burn them out in a full day of shooting so I'd have to say yes it is a need. |

A battery might not last as long as advertised, especially if you're shooting in the cold. Mine lasted about 20 minutes at the Mt. Evans GTG this year, the battery having gotten too cold to function. Man do I wish I'd had a spare then...

get an extra battery or batteries......
I have four batteries now never have to worry about running out. The worst thing that can happen is to run out of battery juice... it sucks I had my canon battery that came with the camera and another cheap crappy battery and both ran out of juice on a 1 day outting... So I went to sterlingtek.com and brought two batteries. These batteries are awesome a whole day of shooting and I still never run out of power.

Same here. 2 in the grip and a charged spare.
Bought 2 generic (don't know the brand) on-line for about £30 delivered and they are just as good as the canon one.
AA's in the grip are next to useless though. Only managed around 40 - 50 shots off brand new Duracells!!! |

| Having spares in the bag is also a good thing just in case you ever go out in a hurry to shoot and have forgotten to recharge the battery, or left it in the charger at home (it happens). Sterlinktek's as mentioned are nice and cheap. |

I bought an extra one with my new 30D (Which arrived less then 30 minutes ago! w00t!)
If you don't want to run out of juice at the wrong time, get the extra battery. Batteries are just about as important as having plenty of memory cards. |

Just bought 3 Sterlingtek NB2L 1500mAh batteries after advice from this site, but they do not work with the Canon XTi/400D! Is it the charger, camera, or both, I don't know, but charging light goes to OFF instead of GREEN when I try to charge them, and when charged once, it goes from green to off in seconds. There is no sign of life at all when battery is inserted, nada. The power adaptor I bought seems to work, though.
Anyone had any luck with Sterlingtek on the XTi/400D? If it is only the charger, a OEM charger might solve it ...

I have 7 batteries on hand for the Canons. I find in cold weather, continuous shutter, long houred jobs etc all takes its toll and they don't last as long. I have only had one occasion where I have had to run home and try and find a spare. And that was when I had 4 batteries. Not anymore.

I have 4 batteries, but to be honest the new 5D doesn't appear to chew them up the way the old 10D used to. Even when running the 100-400 lens in IS mode and shooting in servo focus mode it rarely needs more than 2 batteries in a day. Most of the time I can get away with just the one.
