Perhaps the recent incident has created a heightened sensitivity to unusual voting trends; which generally tend to follow the bell curve.
I noticed a recent comment on a ribbon winner pointing out the fact that the particular image had a disproportionate number of 10s. Out of curiosity, I dug into the challenge archives to see how unusual this.
I came up with a random assortment of images that have a greater number of 10 votes than the average. These shots seem to be anomalies, since the majority of the photographer's other images tend to follow the bell curve (With the exception of sexy shots). Voter cheating does not seem a likely cause for this occurrance.
Assuming (as I do) that these are accurate ratings. Discuss the possible reasons why voters might give a particular image so many more 10 votes than 9 votes. This phenomenon obviously occurs when sex is the subject. So what about the others? |

They don't break it.
If all the people that voted 10 would have a voting schale that was a tad bigger they would give 11's and then it would be a bell curve.
I don't think these pictures have strange voting patterns. |

Maybe we should have a Spinal Tap challenge where the scale goes to 11 ;-) |

Votes of 9 are generally less common IMO than 8 or 10. If the entry is good enough for a 9, many voters will go right for the 10. I don't know why. |

As Bolti posted, they actually don't break from the normal behavior. Imagine that the curves for these shots continued to the right, to 11, 12, etc.; then add up all those "predicted" votes and stuff them into the "10" box, which is the highest vote actually available. The result will look like what you see. |

Theories (3 for $1.00)
1. The web servers that the trolls use were down for maintainence.
2. Several people got a raise at work and were feeling very generous.
3. Major sunspot activity caused havoc with network equipment resulting in data scrambling.
4. Nothing happened. People just felt like giving out tens.
5. The voting page had a glitch. When people clicked 9 it was counted as a 10.
6. Somewhere, a butterfly flapped its wings.
7. The photos were actually worthy of 10's and several people had an attack of conscience.
8. Rikki's voting block were all drunk that day and voted for the wrong photo.
9. D&L really liked that photo and changed everyone's vote.
10. It just worked out that way.
If none of these theories work I can probably come up a few more. Let me know. :D

When I give out a 10, it's for any picture that IMO would be worthy of a ribbon. Sometimes it may be a handful and any one deserves it. I reserve the 8 and 9 votes for really good pictures that are not quite ribbon-worthy. It would be really nice to see a breakdown of votes cast by ourselves for a challenge. |
