Question for the Elements users - I bought a copy for my mom and installed it on her computer. She just got a spiffy new 6 MP Casio which seems to do a really nice job. Problem is when you open a picture in the editor portion of PS Elements, it's WAY darker than it is when just looking at it in Windows or on the camera. Anyone know why this is, or if there's some setting I need to check?

Thanks!

You could click on the "Edit" Tab at the top and then go to "color settings" and see what is checked off there. I have mine set on "Web" Color management which uses sRGB color - you can also check "Print" color management which used either sRGB or AdobeRGB.

I've never had that sort of trouble with Elements but perhaps the color settings will help.

I am no sure about WAY darker but it may appear less bright. If you are looking at the image at full screen size in windows in slide show and your computer is dark the image appears brighter in windows than it does when you open the same image up in PSElements at a smaller size with a gray and white background and the Elements tool bars and such. At least it does for me.

I'll look at the color settings and see if that helps. It really is significantly darker in Photoshop than it is in the Windows viewer. I'll work at it for awhile - I've got Photoshop and haven't worked with elements before. What I may do is stick her card in my laptop and see how the pictures appear here. It's a new camera and we're just learning how to play with it. Thanks for the inputs!

For what it's worth - it was the monitor. I bought her a nice new 19" LCD today and it made all the difference in the world. :-)

Glad to see you got it working...

Not really directed at the post as you have found a cure but I have seen a lot of people with similar symptoms ask...

Windows Color Management:

When your photos' colors do not appear the same (darker, lighter, different hues, different contrast...etc) when viewed in several different viewing/editing programs, a possible cause is that each is using it's own color profile.

When we (hardware) calibrate our monitors a color profile is created and Windows is automatically set to that profile, and it is loaded at every boot-up . We then have to set each of our editing programs manually to that calibrated color profile. PS, PSP, DIP and others have a color management dialog that we make this change.

For those who don't calibrate their monitors, Windows uses a Standard profile called sRGB Colorspace Profile.icm (aka) sRGB IEC61966-2.1. If the editing program color profile does not match the Windows Color Profile then Photos done in the editing software may not appear the same in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, ACDSee, Picassa and the likes.

Monitors also have Color Profiles, if any sort of CD Software came with the monitor was loaded it may have included a color profile, installed it and set Windows to use that Profile. The editing software has no idea of the change unless we go in and set it manually.

Very simple: make sure Windows and your editing software are using the same Color Profile either by setting your editing software to use the same as Windows or Set Windows to use the same one that your editing software is using.

To set Windows (XP) to a Color profile:

Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes > Display (or Start > Run... type in: desk.cpl and press enter)
On the Settings tab click the Advanced button.
On the Color Management tab, choose the same Color Profile that your editing software is using.
