i am considering the tamron 28-75 vs canon 50mm 1.4 USM

im inclined to the tamron on account of flexibility, i've hear alot of good reviews claiming it to rival a prime lens optics..
however i read many reviews saying there was a problem with its focus and had to be sent back for a recalibration.. does anyone have any input on that..
also in comparison with the 50mm 1.4 .. which would you favor ?

Mine's been flawless. Haven't heard of any problems by others on this site.

It's a good lense, good sharpness, built well IMO, and priced for a budget. My only complaint has been its autofocus accuracy in low light situations. But my guess, without having much experience to draw on, is that many lenses have trouble finding focus in low light/low contrast situations.

All things considered, seems like a great lens for the money. Good luck!

Apples and Oranges...it's impossible to compare those two lenses.

The Tammy is more expensive but it can do so much more than the 50mm.

pawdrix : i see you have a nikkor 28-75, why have 2 of the same focal range and f/2.8.. how do they compare to each other

My Tamron is super sharp, the only issue I have with mine is that at the very end of the focal point, near infinity it seems to jump a touch. Not sure what the issue is, and I'm going to send it in eventually but for now I dont have anything to cover that range so I'll be using it. Doesnt effect too much anyway.

The glass on the Nikkor is far better...sharper with more contrast BUT the Tamron is an awesome lens and for the money, it is totally amazing....right up there with the Nikkor which costs 4X as much.

I can't walk walk around with the 50mm. I find it's a range that doesn't suit anything I normally shoot (street, cityscape, candid portraiture etc). I have to jump all over the place in lieu of having the zoom function and I'm rarely satisfied with what I get in frame. It is however a sharp lens, the 50mm (1.4 or 1.8). The Tamron is a great, super sharp, walk-around lens.

The only problem I've run into with my Tammy is that in low light situations, the AF ends up hunting a bit. This can be solved by somehow changing the lighting to bump the contrast, or going to manual focus. Aside from that, I love the lens!
