I'm so going for the brown!!! I overdid the processing...big time! LOL!

g

I didn't over process mines, the photo is sharp, the colors are good...I hope composition is good...and I still have you beat for the brown. I think I realize what it is...my photo is being shown right after the soon to be blue ribbon winner.

Oh and my photo is more realistic too...maybe I should have went for cute. Let the comments pour in soon this week. I hate not knowing whats wrong with my photo.

I didn't enter, but I just did a quick run through the images, and I have to say Well Done DPC. Lot's of creativity there!

Well, morning didn't make things any better. No one miraculously came to their senses, and as usual no one has even bothered to tell me why. Two undeservingly sub-5 images in a row without a peep of justifying explanation! Wow, thanks DPC! :P

It is quickly becoming evident that spending time actually setting up a shot and spending a little money to get the right props is a massive waste of my limited resources. The effort makes no difference at all. I have some really crappy zero-effort shots that have scored much much higher than the stuff I've put in lately, work of which I am proud, that shows just how far I've truly come. None of it is too far off the mainstream, none of it is obscure, and I am ripped to shreds anyway. It's really easy for people to sit on the sidelines and say, "Oh shoot for yourself," but then why enter challenges at all? There IS a point and a value to learning what it is that people like. Successful art combines innovation with appeal. It's indescribably frustrating to listen to such flip responses from people whose work isn't being dismissed as utter garbage.

To everyone complaining (!!!) about high fives and low sixes, I have no sympathy whatsoever for you at this point. I invite you to trade your scores for mine. We'll see then just how appreciative you suddenly are for what you've got.

I guess everyone's expectations rise as they go further up the scoring chain, but I have to agree with you here. It's pretty demoralising to see people moaning about scraping 5s or 6s when you're languishing in a low 4, with no comments to explain what is wrong with the photo.

Personally I am surprised with my picture. I mean, I've looked at others in the challenge and yes, there are a lot of creative photos, but mine seems to be getting slated when I can't see that it's actually that bad. I look at it and think "is this worth a 6?" and I think well, yes, at the outside. Probably in the cold light of day I would give my own picture a 4 or a 5. But for it to be scoring 4.1 that means people are voting me in at 3 or 2 for the average to hit around there, and then not even leaving a comment to explain why.

Ta very much, like.

My husband feels the same way he has three shots in the fours(well one just crawled over 5.00 a minute ago) and he's giving up on submitting completley unless there arent enough submission on our WPL team. his spirit is definately broken. I can tell how badly he feels about it. And I'm sorry your feeling that way too. Even having gotten a ribbon two weeks ago i still dont know what poeple want. it didnt help me figure it out. I thought that shot was a high 4 or low 5 by dpc standards. when i think i have a shot dpc will score high it doesnt. i can figure it out to save my life. shoudl i submit more stuff I'm not completely into? probably not they'd proabably gets 3's. I just hope you keep submitting. your work is good. two or your last three finished photos are in the 6's. thats no small feat here. ((Hugs))

I will take you both down. I am leaving this challenge with a ribbon one way or the other (I already have a 2nd place and a 3rd place finish for the brown in my portfolio)...my experience will crush you. haha.

My wife had a shot to enter. She had a friend come over to model on Friday. Aimee had the idea all week and was looking forward to the shoot. She was excited about having a different type of pic in her portfolio. She took the shots and edited one that was pretty amazing. Great pose and brilliant editing. She dropped off a copy of her entry to her friend who modeled and she liked it as well. Aimee was doing some last minute tweaks last evening and just as she was finishing up she got a call from her friend. Her friends fiancee thougth that she was showing a bit too much skin and that he didnt want it posted. Aimee was crushed. The pic didnt even come close to being sleazy or too explicit. Her model was wearing a halter top and it showed nothing even close to being inappropraite. Had it been our daughter we would have posted it with complete confidence and comfort. But she couldnt now post it knowing that permission had been revoked. Aimee had alot of time, emotion and expectations in this picture and now she cant show it to anyone. It was easily a top ten pic and not her standard food shot with things sticking out of it (see her profile if you have no clue what I am talking about). It would have easily crushed my score. Rough day for sure.

OH NO! That sux! I can't wait to do a shot with a real person whos not a member of my famiy some day. lol I can't imagine getting it just the way I wanted it and then not being able to submit it. that brings up an interesting question though if you get someone to sign a release is it then good no matter what? or do they have a certian amount of time to change thier minds? I know this being a friend she wouldnt want to play the hard ass and use it anyway even if she had a release but its crappy this "boyfriend" can call all the shots. what a barnaclehead as my 3 year old would say. lol I have some better words but i'll stick with barnaclehead for now. Sorry Aimee! although obviously I do like your food with things sticking out shots too. :)

You actually don't need a model release for art. Especially art for which you're not receiving compensation.

I suggest a burkha for a wedding gift. Sounds like she'll need it. :-/

This thread is looking like a big whinge session. Where are the people bragging about their 6+ scores.

I'm on the up again, although still not where I thought the shot should be.

To put this it into perspective, In my last 10 challenges I've won a blue, had 6 scores in a row of 6+, and in those 10 challenges I averaged over 6.1. Not bad.

I thought that after my good run that I finally "got it". I didn't. My personal expectations rose quickly. For a while (before the run) I told myself that I wouldn't submit anything that would score below 5.5. That went up during my run. I was disappointed when I got a sub 6 score in Stopped Motion. I will certainly get another for From the Ground Up. I raised my bar too high. But the point is that it's my bar and I'm disappointed when I don't reach it. It has nothing to do with others that are scoring higher or lower. So I will lower it again to a more realistic number.

Onto the current challenge. I know what went into my picture and I think it came out how I wanted. It's an accurate representation of my subject. I expected another 6+ score, or at least close to it. But I made the mistake of not pulliing myself away from the picture and seeing it with different eyes. Without knowing how it looked in real life, the picture doesn't stand on it's own.

And special thanks to hotpasta for the lone comment. He told me what was wrong from the voter's perspective. I feel better now knowing why it's scoring low.

The last time I looked, my score was around 4.7.
