Nice, very good composition and I like the fluffy bits. I took a shot of one of these while I was out & about and it looked nowhere near as good. Not keen on the B&W though - the green leaves surely would have set off the white a lot better?

bod, exactly why I shot it in B+W. I didn't want the focus on the leaves. That is why they are blurred. I wanted the focus on the texture of the image.

Clyde Butcher said it best. Color is a photocopy, B+W is an emotion. lately I have been striving for texture and emotion in my shots. Pretty colors go aways after a while. An emotion can stay for a lifetime... Hopefully someday I can get there...

Thanks - Dave

I really like this - the texture comes through really strongly. Slightly lacking in the depth of field though, as you seem to have tried to get the whole seed head in focus but missed some of the immediate foreground. I like the use of black and white to pick out the seeds.

Gordon, 68mm of extension tubes on a 70-200 created a DOF of about nothing. LOL. I had to chose what I wanted in focus. I have dozens of shots with all different areas in. I chose this one because of the detail in the more profile of the seeds. The DOF is bothersome. The same tubes on a 50 or 100mm lens would have even created a shallower DOF... My kingdom for a 600mm f4 to throw sometubes on. Real big DOF at 1:1 or better!!!

Thanks for the kind words... Dave

That's a lovely photo. Too bad it didn't make the challenge. I don't mind the little too shallow dof, actually it adds some interest to the shot imho.

Fair enough, and bad luck on missing the challenge with it :-/

I understand the problem you had - I'd have just preferred to see the leaves more blurred and the foreground sharper
