I live in a very suburban hood with no crime. I could leave my door unlocked and have a gold safe in my living room and nobody would touch it. This is why I was so surprised to have a loud knock on my door at 12:00 a.m. I peered through the window and found two guys fighting on my front porch. I locked my doors, and had my wife summons the police, and asked the guys what they were doing. The one guy turned out to be a taxi driver who had tackled a 14 year old kid that skipped out on a fair. There were 2 other kids with them, and they were hopping fences down the block to escape the persuit. The cops showed up, guns drawn and quickly cuffed the one kid. About 30 cops circled the block looking for the other 2, and searched my house to make sure they didn't sneak in or that they were not hanging out in my backyard. The kids took a cab from a shaddy part of town dressing in thier gang garb and told the police that they were here to see thier girlfriend. After some checking it seems that they were already wanted on charges of doing similar things.

Kinda freaky.

I am buying a gun.

I'd skip the gun part. Sounds like you did all the right things. Problem with a gun is if the bad guy has one, he's a lot more likely to have his at the ready than you are, and a whole lot more likely to use it if he finds out you have one. Personal opinion, of course.

I'll agree -- skip the gun. If you are not the kind to already have one -- you are likely not the kind to use one if you had it. Likely to just give a criminal without a gun something else to use against you.

One isolated event does not change your neigborhood.

Skip calling 911 - a steady hand and trigger finger are faster :-)
Then you can call the morgue and never worry about them returning again.

Yea man skip the gun, and I'm a gun owner. With having children now mine are locked in a gun safe and never see the light of day. I just have a phone by the bed and my trusty Louisville Slugger behind the bedroom door. ;)

edit to say: Yes that's a real Mickey Mantle bat and yes it's mine! Thanks Dad!

Just who are you advocating murdering? The kids that tried to get a free ride or the cab-driver trying to make a buck? Perhaps both since they were both fighting on his front step. :/

The kids were up to no good more than likely planning a bit of a robbing spree. The cab driver was brave tackling them. I just happened to win the lottery of weirdness that night. It wasn't even a full moon. It was kinda like a weird movie, and I am a bad actor.

Well if nobody locks doors in your town then all you need to do is lock yours (and maybe add a security alarm) and you should be fine. Why would someone mess around with a more difficult home to break into if all the other ones are 10 times easier?

There is nothing wrong with owning a gun. It is one of our rights as a citizen of the USA.

Police may not be able to get to your house quick enough and you need to be able to defend yourself if necessary.

Buy a shotgun...everyone knows what cocking a shotgun sounds like and the noise enough should scare anyone off...if they still persist, and are in your home...point and shoot...it is hard to miss.

I doubt they were going to go on a robbing spree. They were bailing out on a cab. That sounds to me like something that would be a minor boyish prank of sorts even in the safest of areas. It's probably good kids doing stupid stuff. My cousin blew up a mailbox when he was younger and got arrested. He meant no harm by it. It's just what young guys do when they want to impress their friends. Maybe they went into town to go shopping or drinking and spent too much. So they bailed a cab.. big whoop. It's not right, but I doubt they were going to go rob anyone. Had the cabby not tackled any of them the young guys probably would have just regrouped, laughed about it, and walked the rest of the way home.

I obviously don't know these kids or their histories, but I'm one to try and assume the better before the worst. If they were anything like the kids I grew up with they are harmless and there's no need to start buying guns to protect your family. The kids they caught are probably going to have one hell of a talking to from their parents and the police. Lock your door and go back to bed.

=)

Excellent point! Moving the action on a shotty sends a lot clearer message than "I've got my baseball bat!" Before buying the reasonably inexpensive pump action shotgun, look into classes and range time. Practice makes perfect. And don't forget to let friends and family know that from now on, your doors are locked and you have a gun. Tell them to feel free to drop buy, just call when they get close so they aren't mistaken for shady characters. Also check local listings for rules/regs as to having to take someone out on your property...you don't always have to drag a foot in the door.
