ok, it was 00:30 this morning and I ambled into the kitchen for my bedside glass of water. As I was filling the glass I sensed movement on the sinktop and noticed some sort of bug that seemed to be moving without moving (if you see what I mean).

I went and got my glasses and nearly sh*t myself when I saw this, but being a fotog stuck the camera through the kitchen door and pointed in the bugs general direction. The flash sent it wild and through the (now) closed kitchen door I could hear it banging into cupboards.

Needless to say I had interesting dreams and used plenty of dissinfectant this evening ;)

ID anybody and should I expect to see the offspring late another night?

It may be a Carrion Beetle. Possibly a Soldier Beetle. I haven't located any first rate verification yet.

R.

Yup, Carrion Beetle: //www.entomology.umn.edu/cues/4015/morpology/silphid1.jpg

"Carrion beetles (order Coleoptera). Adult carrion beetles feed on decaying animal matter or maggots."

Aren't you GLAD you asked?

BTW, I'm not sure the little ones are babies; I think they may be lice feeding on the "leftovers"; aren't you even GLADDER you asked?

That's an ugly bug. Hopefully it took all the offspring with it.

They aren't offspring. They are mites.

Great beetle. Thanks for sharing!

You can rest easier that they're mites and not babies at least. I'd assume that the mites would want to stay with their host where as babies tend to run off and get lost.

Considering these beetles are attracted to rotten meat...I'd be more concerned with why it was in your kitchen;)

"Habitat: Anywhere that dead animals might be found. They often fly towards lights at night"

//www.uksafari.com/sexton.htm

If it makes you feel any better, I've got about 10 escaped caterpillars roaming about my house right now. I'll either have butterflies in the spring, or a stink in a week;)

Edit to update info.
