I'm going to Mexico City for 2 weeks (for work) and have been told that hauling an expensive camera around would be like painting a target on my back with the words "Mug Me!" across the shoulders.

I first thought about buying those 35mm disposable toys and scanning the good shots, but I'm wondering if I couldn't pick up a halfway decent pocket digicam for pretty much the same price as buying and developing 100 to 200 film shots.

Anyone have a suggestion for a decent digital for around $100US? The Canon PowerShot A100 is the lowest price on DPReview, and @ $165, it's not TOO far over budget, but I figured I'd see if anyone knows of any real gems out there?

Thanks all!

I read the same thing about going to Russia. I wouldn't count on a bunch of young punks won't really know the difference in a cheap digicam and an expensive one though. You also have to deal with batteries and memory if you go with the digital option.

At least if they do get your A100 it is only a $165 camera. Batteries and mem card shouldn't be too much of a problem I would think. You might also look at some used cameras, you can pick up some decent ones for very little these days.

If its really that bad, I'd carry a gun. Call me over protective, but ever since I lost my last I'm not gonna let anything get inbetween me and my digital camera.

I got Isaac a Fuji A101 for about $100 after rebate. Has landscape and macro settings, 1.3MP image, and seems to take pretty decent snapshots that should print OK at 4x6 or 5x7 size. Takes SmartMedia (I think up to 128mb), can use 2 AA batteries, has a USB cable, and can function as a card-reader when attached to the computer. We're happy with it so far...

Thanks GeneralE... I'll definitely take a look at that one... If Isaac can work it then it would probably be a good choice for Malia (4) to use in a year or two...

Thanks Ricky, but I think airport security might have a few words for me if I had a Smit & Wesson in my carry on :) I'll just look poor and mean and I should be ok :)

She can use it right now! It's small and light, and has a pretty positive and responsive shutter button. I got it so Isaac would quit having to borrow my Olympus all the time...Get yourself a big memory card and let her shoot on the 8mb card which comes with it (another thing you can't do with a roll-film camera!).

I recently bought a Sony U10 as a second camera. It doesn't have a zoom, but the size is a big plus if you want to avoid trouble (it can go virtually unnoticed in my hand, and I've got really small hands), and you won't have to buy a different kind of memory cards. I don't know what prices are like there, but they've been reduced drastically in South Africa over the last few weeks.
