In the market for something similar to the Canon 24-70 L.
I have a 17-40mm but need something less wide but not as expensive as Lglass. Gotta be a sharp lens.

Really want to try out some Sigma lenses. Any thoughts on what would work for me with the 5D?

All thoughts and links appreciated.

I'll be the first to mention the venerable Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.

I own the Sigma 2.8 24-70 and it was a nice lens, till I dropped it. I am going (just have not pressed the button) for the Canon 24-70 for build quality.
Here is the recent thread ... I am sure there have been more

The Tamron is really good, I like mine a lot. I haven't used the 24-70 yet, though.

I use the Sigma also. Really like it it. I'm sure the Canon rocks, but, way too much $$$$.

Another vote here for the Tamron 28-75mm. Wonderful lens for the money.

We have the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG. Its an Okay lens but definitely noticable difference in the build quality between the Canon L and the Sigma. Since testing Tamron's and Sigma's offerings in the 17-50 range I found the Tamron's build quality to be much better for the same price (obviously this was a different focal length but I'd have to say that Cindee & I both dislike the Sigma and most of that is due to the build).

If you're considering either of these brands for your 24-70 needs I'd suggest trying one out in a store but if you have to shoot blind then take a chance on the Tamron first; it just has a ton of support and having the Sigma version of this lens I'm not all that thrilled.

i just sold my 17-40 for the 24-70. the extra 7mm width wasn't worth the $700 17-40 for me. the 24-70 is big n heavy but the pictures rock! i'm gonna keep this one for a long time

Ive been borrowing my sons 24-70 for a few months and I really like it. But he is taking it back and I am in a panic. I really don't want to spend 1,200 to replace it.

My son just told me the sigma quality is better than the Tamrons. Any arguments on this?

I'd argue that. The Tamron 28-75 just rocks, with image quality virtually equivalent to the Canon 24-70.

I'd argue that, too. We have the Sigma and when we were at Showcase in Atlanta a few weeks ago tried out several lenses, the Tamron included. I'd go with the Tamron.

Cheekly.. I would say the legendary...
Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM

My vote goes to the:
Tamron SP AF 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical IF for Canon
