Why do the really great and really awful photos get all of the comments, but the mediocre ones, the ones that could/might be great with a little help don't get very many at all?
Again, this is just my experience in the few challenges that I've been in. But I'd kill for comments.

I would not actually kill someone or anything just to get the comments, it's a figure of speech, people. |

For me I don't have a whole lot of time so the few photos that I've been commenting on have been ones that stood out with potential, but missed their potential for whatever reason. |

yea that is the way it goes. I think it is easier. if it is bad then you can talk about what you don't like if it is great then you can just say "great job". it is harder to comment on the others.
If you have some photos you want comments on post them here and I will comment on them for you. BTW meat man was robbed. |

I think it's a lot harder to critique middle of the road photos because in so many cases, they just barely miss and it's hard to say what could be improved. There are a lot of times that I don't comment because while I don't particularly care for something, it's not necessarily "bad", just doesn't work for me. It's hard to say that in such a way that you don't come off as being overly critical.
Good photos are easy because most comments are complimentary. Bad photos are easy because problems are easy to spot and you don't run much risk of a subjective arguement.
FWIW, I try to comment on an equal number of middle scores as low ones. I don't often comment on the really good ones. |

I haven't looked at your profile yet, so I don't know your photos, but a lot of times, it's hard to critique a photo that doesn't really stand out, especially if it's technically good but the subject matter is bland... people don't usually want to say, "you could improve your photo if you shot something else" |

I joined the site because it is a good place to learn. And my challenge photos are the ones that I'm trying ideas with and want to learn from. It's disheartening to not recieve comments during the challenge, especially when it's a high 4/low 5.
I feel by not getting the comments during the challenges, I'm not learning as much as I could. I do take each comment to heart and try to apply it to the next challenge.
I think my last 2 challenges B&W and Zen were really good shots (but we all think that about our own). And the lack of comments as to why it's scoring like it is makes it hard to swallow.
OK, I've ranted enough.

Really good photos and really bad photos usually move you in some way. Middle of the road photos don't really tend to do anything. It's easy to put !!!!!!!!!!!!!! and !&^*@#^&*! into words but _______________ is much harder. "Something about this should have been better but I'm not really sure what" isn't all that constructive but sometimes that's all there is to think. |

I'll add another thought - of those you not getting comments on your "middle of the road" pictures (and I have a nice collection of those), are YOU commenting on "middle of the road" pictures? You may find that by doing that, you'll also gain insight on why your own shots are in that same zone. |

Let's try this again - I'm challenging all of you getting midrange scores (4.5-5.5) to go through and comment on all the pictures to which *you* gave a "5". Any takers? A corollary - if you're one of those midrange scoring folks and you get some of these comments, you're not allowed to get all righteously indignent about 'em. Read 'em, see if they have any validity, check "Comment was helpful". Sound like a plan? |

Left you a few comments, and I also noticed that you also have a comment from one of the Critique Club members which you haven't marked as helpful.

Thanks for the comments. I forgot about the CC one..that's taken care of now.
And this wasn't particularly just for comments for me, but for others as well. I've been reading the forums where people are wanting comments during the challenge, so they can get the extra something to make their shots better. |

I can completely understand the frustration of those folks who are getting those mediocre scores and no comments to help. I think as a voter/commenter though, it's equally as frustrating to take the time to leave comments on some random, average photo not knowing how the photographer will take it, or if they'll even be read or appreciated.
So, I joined the critique club, figuring that most of the shots that end up there will be from people who want an honest critique, and not just the fluffy "nice job" comments. Not that I've been critiquing a lot lately, but I notice that the number of shots critiqued is low, and the number awaiting critiques is still very high.
