First I just got my 50mm F/1.4 used off ebay (YEAH!), it's awesome - way better than my kit lens. I love the DoF.

In my first test shots I noticed a weird blue glow around my daughters necklace though. Is it the lens? The Camera? My own paranoia?

This is a 100% crop. Any ideas?

Thats odd, are you using a cheap UV filter? I got cheap generic from B&H when I first got my 50 mm 1.8 and it was putting weird flares and things, now I use it when I can't find my lens cap. :)

EDIT: One more question, how is when you try the lens when it is at smaller aperture then 1.4?

Yes, it's definitely there. There's also a bit of the purple next to her eyelashes on the side of her face. I've heard of this happening with P&S cameras, but that's not your issue. I'd wonder about the filter, too.

Hmmm, That is very strange, it seems to appear blue around the eyes to, so it's not just picking up on the white...

Whis i could help, Hope All goes well

EDIT: Too slow ;-)

its cause your using 1.4, the50mm gets better at 2.8

D'OH - it came with a cheap Tiffen skylight filter attached and I was shooting somewhat towards the sun. That may be it, I'll have to try some other experiments without the filter now.

Well what fun is it to have a 1.4 if it doesn't get good until 2.8

I hope it's actually the stupid skylight filter. Some of the other shots look fine - all though with this short of DoF sharp focus can be a challenge. I'm gonna need to practice a bit with this thing.

That's a shame. It's the lens. I found my older lenses have the same problem. It's called chromatic abberation.

The best thing you can do is to avoid high-contrast situations such as the pearls - I usually find mine around the tree brances in a bright sky.

yeah thats bad, but the problem is that your subject is a little far from you, the 50mm is a little bad for long distance shots. but is super for close portraits and product photography,

pd the 50mm is sharper at 11f than at 16 or 22

That was my first thought, my cheap Quantaray has horrible CA but I can usually fix that easily enough in Bibble (I only shoot RAW). The CA sliders didn't seem to do anything but mess it all up though and the blue fringe is much wider than any CA I've seen before.

I was hoping to use this to shoot my daughters low light ballet shows... now I'm concerned it may not be up to the task.

To me it looks like funny lighting like shadows or such. Oh wait I went and looked at the necklase wierd? I use my 60 mm for portraits and have never got anything to look like that.

Ditto on the chromatic abberations comment. I have a Canon 50 f/1.4 and experience the same issues in certain situations. It's a fast lens for sure but it doesn't have high quality glass inside.
