I don't mean to be mean or rude to your employees. You should have a good rapport with them but hanging out after work is a mistake. |
I've been waiting to see how long it would take for someone to make this point. What we are seeing here is the almost inevitable end-result of too close a friendship between boss and employee. It's ALWAYS a bad idea.

Trust I know what you all are saying. Do I want this public? Why not, I'm not naming names or company names so I think I'm safe.
Being friends with superiors? I TOTALLY regret becoming friends with him. I can be stupid at times and try to see the good in everyone but I got blindsided with all this. I'm nice to everyone and maybe that is a fault of mine. I don't trust him or have respect for him as he doesn't trust or respect me. I have learned my lesson.

I had a situation like that years ago on a job. We had two nightshift supervisors one for each of the two departments Metal Finish and Paint. Our Supervisors both would disappear alot we would walk all over the plant looking for them when problems developed even looked in the office areas, parking lots etc, Never could find them. Then one day we figured it out. They were walking across the street to a local watering hole. they would spend a couple of hours at a time over there, while we did the decision making for them. To make a long story short. When my annual review came along and the plant manager asked me why my production had slipped from the previous year, I explained to him in blunt detail that it was very difficult to finish a job when our supervisors have all the answers but are never around to hear the questions. When he asked what I meant by that . I told him to take his wife out for a few drinks that night at the bar across the street from the plant. Which he did. The next day I was promoted to 2nd Shift Supervisor of Metal Finishing. I felt no guilt at all and everyone else on 2nd shift seemed happy to get rid of those other bozo's

I'm not worried about it. If the company is taking the time to look this up then they aren't utilizing their time very well since our company has other major problems to be resolved.

Gayle, you absolutely did the right thing. That guy was clearly having serious problems and was sabotaging his job in every way possible.
BTW, how is your show going? Your profile says that you're having your first show right now, as if you didn't have enough going on. :-) Good luck with all of this!

Rule #1 - Never be friends with your boss.
Rule #2 - Don't make friends with people who look at porn on their work computer when it's so obvious you know about it.

This original post cracked me up. I'm reading along thinking yeah, yeah, I've seen that before then whoa... "watching porn and playing poker on the company computer". That came out of left field and certainly points to a huge character problem when doing this at work and would be a firing offense at 90+% of companies out there.

Rule #1 - lesson learned here
Rule #2 - he was just that stupid and blatant about it.

You would think he would have been fired but not, they gave him a form to fill out, he refused and the just patted him on the head said that's ok, you don't have to sign it then and he was right back on the porn! Its a boys club at this company!

do you think I have caused him to quit? Should I feel bad?

Ummm..I bet his bosses gave him an ultimatum, or perhaps thrrough his high drunken condition he saw teh writing on the wall.
Something happened a year ago - his paycut, being mean to you, wifely troubles - whatever it was, karma perhaps, you didn't cause it so don't worry about it.
Your life will improve now. No need to feel bad about that!

Not necessarliy. My wife works one of the largest employers in teh county and to get fired there is nearly impossible.
Caught with porn? no problem
sleeping on the job? no problem
driving patients with out a license? no problem
having sex with patients? wasn't proved, but no disciplinary action
letting a patient drive the company van? no problem
losing a patient's car keys? coming in late? calling off at the last minute, repeatedly.
Pure incompetence - no problem.
They did 'let a guy go' - the VP and Pres wanted him fired, for cause, hell, for mutliple causes. they kept him another 30 days until the new budget was approved to they could say 'your position has been elimiated'. he knew he was going to be fired - he hand twice monthly 'counseling' sessions and his frst words at every one (for 4 months...) was "Are you going to fire me today?" - and they still didn't!
As opposed to my last employer - they'd call on your day off, about 4 hours after you got off work, and tell you to come in cause they were short handed - and if you refused they'd threaten to fire you! I saw them fire lots of people for small, but valid, reasons.

You did the right thing there's no "i" in teamwork, and you can't expect to carry someone else's weight espeacially since he's not evening puting in an effort.
Kudos to you, you did the right thing. |

He can't expect you too lie for him, although apparently he did expect you to do his work. That you choose to do, lieing for him is where you drew the line. Doing his work protected your job and the companies bottom line, lying for him didn't do any good. It bothered you that he was wasting company time with the porn etc... never mind openning up the company to virus/etc...
If a friend asks you to lie for him, he doesn't respect himself or you.
If he doesn't respect you or himself is he someone you want to call a friend?

Ok I am going to play the devils advocate. Since I don't know you beyond DPC. I have to assume there are three sides to the story Yours his and somewhere in between is the truth. If what all you say is the truth and taking your word that it is then yes he is wrong and you are right and do not feel bad about it. Feel sad you ever called him your friend. Needless to say I would not get involved unless forced to by my employer over any matter involving the termination of another employee. If they make a mistake based on something you told them you will be held accountable. This is why a former employer is basically hand tied and not allowed to answer but certain questions pertaining to a former employee. But good luck in the future and remember there are many good people still out there. |

I totally understand where you are coming from. I play devil's advocate all the time. There's so much more to this story then I have time to type in. I haven't embellished anything. Its been a horrible year professionally for me. Its hard to work for an alcoholic and he even admits to that but he says he's a professional at it.
I want to thank everyone for your support on this horrible issue I have been dealing with. I truely feel that I have made the right decisions and don't regret telling and hopefully now maybe life can get easier.
