Good advice. Resellerratings.com is a good resource, but I'd also use a bit of caution with them and especially other online rating systems. I know of some retailers that will offer small gifts for postitive ratings.

I had bad dealings with an online retailer that eventually did send me a camera (after I cancelled order) and hit me with a restocking fee. To get them to authorize the return I had to sign a waiver stating that I would not leave negative reviews or they would charge $100 to my cc. I signed it to get the return taken care of, with the intention to leave a negative review later. My CC company was no help in his matter and I didn't want to deal with it any more (weeks into this already) so I dropped it. I know they charged others the $100 and just wanted it (and them) to go away.

That sounds like something the Federal Trade Commission would be interested in.

I went through many phones calls and a lot of stress to just get my refund (minus restocking fee). In my own best interest I decided to just drop it - to pursue it would have added more stress and anger to my life. FWIW, I heard that vigilante hackers took down their site, although I know it popped up again. That site went down and they are no w doing business under another name.

But my original point still stands - beware of reviews. I read many review sites before purchasing from them and thought I was safe.

The unfortunate part is, if you never do anything, everyone after you is going to read reviews and assume they are safe, too. You should at least consider contacting the Better Business Bureau.

You're still not getting the camera! :P

For some reason, this reminded me of the other scams--you get a box with a brick in it or the ebay listing said "eos 5D original box" not "eos 5D in original box" :-)

I had a bad experience also. After I complained to American Express, the vendor changed its website so the items in question weren't on it, then claimed they never offered that item (they sold a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and shipped the 24-70 f/3.5-5.6)

Nothing happened until I told the vendor "I listened to my recordings of our calls and checked the printouts I made of your web pages". They never asked for verification, so I suppose this will work even if you didn't record the call.

When buying a camera people just have to smart or have common sense on what sites they buy from. If its a site you never ever heard of and the price is to good to be true. Then a simple google search or that reseller website will show peps all of the mad customers they have. Samething with ebay you have to do some research berfore you buy from people.

Their is a link floating around this site someone where in a old thread and someone had all the listing and pictures of the so called camera stores websites that rip people off.

oh yeah that also must read the fine print some people put a long paragraph or two and they know people wont read it all, then somewhere in there is a few words that tells you..... you are bidding on directions of how to get this item for free or just the empty box is for sell

I actually did buy my camera from ebay, after lots and lots of research and comparing prices.... everything turned out great. You just have to read everything and be carefull

I think that this is a really great lesson. One that says, Buy from where you know and trust, sometimes a few$$$ spent is worth the stress and agony you will save later.

If they threaten a 100$ charge, simply call your credit card company, report it stolen, and they will issue a new card, with a new number. Now they have nothing to charge. But, you have to wait 5-10 business days to receive and activate your new card.

Also, it is probably illegal to claim it was stolen when it really wasn't.

Would "missing" be better?

The store I dealt with only had one incident with bbb and it was reported as resolved. Good idea, but not 100% foolproof.

ohh yes!! I know that website very well after sprint pcs felt my wrath (damn did they sprint make me mad)

I wrote a letter to them after my incident with sprint and they took care of it right away and I got finally a manager who called me and it was resolved and I left them for good.

Given that there isn't a 100% foolproof solution, short of never buy anything ever, we'll just have to settle for good ideas and common sense.
