This is a shot of Dublin's Sandymount station on an overcast day. This was home base on our vacation to Ireland and we'd like to print a copy of the photo. There may not be much there to work with but I'd like to give it some more color and life. I'm a relative novice at photoshop but can learn. Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve this shot while keeping it realistic looking?

I thought the sky needed some detail, so did a quick edit. Masked in some clouds from a favorite image of mine.

Its not perfect, but what I could do in 5 minutes.

This?

My take on it...

Edit:
I had to re-upload mine. Apparently I sent the 2.5mb originally! Now it has the smaller 640pixel version of the image.

I really like your version Gary, I went overboard towards the brown/orange side--

I also really like yours Gary. As a total newbie can you sketch out how you approached this?

Thanks, Jack

No...you can't play. I'm taking my ball and going home.

P.S. Very very nice.

These are all great. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Can anyone describe what they did with steps so us newbies can learn? Is it all done with selective color?

edit: ...and adding the sky?

I used a gradient and airbrushing on the sky. Curves and levels adjustment, some selective painting with various blending modes, and contrast/brightness adjustments with sharpening.

Basically repeated passes of contrast masking in different modes for mine, plus gradients sky and fore, plus dodging in the middleground, plus a liberal application of xero's "line art" filter that rendered the outlines. Selective color to get the hot spot out of the sky, hue/sat to work with yellows and reds, and vignetting applied and faded.

Does that help?
