Yesterday, I went out and participated in that wonderful summertime ritual that most parents must go through (at least in the US, and probably elsewhere at least once during the year), when the summer is winding down and everyone looks forward to fall: school clothes/school supply shopping.
Yikes. Of course, the stores are always crowded and the shelves are always full of everything EXCEPT the kind of handwriting tablet your 2nd grader needs FIVE of, or the particular brand of pointed scissors that the 1st grade teachers feel will best suit the class needs. The racks are full of every size khaki shorts EXCEPT the size your child needs. You go store to store to store to get the things you must have, and when you get home, you find you spent more than you planned for and wound up not getting two or three things on the back of the list, meaning you have to go out AGAIN before school starts.
During all the madness, a whim took hold and I did something rash...I bought some work clothes for myself. I know, I know...how could I do that????? My kids need crayons, dammit! But I did, and now I'm experiencing the worst guilt in the world....mom guilt. Now it's a day later, and after trying on the things I bought for myself, I am trying to rationalize my purchase. I did buy $600 worth of clothes for less than $100 by hitting one heck of a sale...but still, the pangs of guilt are there. I am slowly getting over it, because after all, I do have to have decent clothes for work. There are still two thoughts prevalent in my mind, however...
1) I sure do need some new shoes to go with this stuff!
2) With all the money spent on the kids' clothes/supplies and my clothes, I wonder what lens I could have gotten?

Ummm, You can take comfort with this thought: At least it wasn't $600 worth of SHOES for $100. |

My unsolicited advice:
1) Sell the children
2) Go barefoot
3) Buy lenses

What kind of mother would you be without good work clothes?
They are part of the cycle. You need nice clothes to appear professional. You need to appear professional to make money. You need to make money to buy your kids school supplies.
Besides...screw the crayons, they're just going to eat them anyway!

well, you have to look good at work; that's where you got the money to buy the stuff in the first place.
money is just money, you will never have enough and you will always get more.
Relax, get the shoes |

I feel your pain. I never buy myself stuff generally. Then every once in a blue moon i'll pick a few things up and feel like such a b&*ch for having done so. Like i'm taking clothes off my kids backs or something. but it's not like they don't have everything under the sun. they arent really going without but it still feels that way to me. I then buy them even more, Toys, video games, stuff they dont need to help me "make up " for it. they inevitabely act like brats and cant be happy with what I bought them but want even MORE and voila as soon as it hits me that they are way too spoiled...I'm suddenly free of the mom guilt. lol |

Hey!! My kid resembles that remark!! ;-D
Get the shoes Laurie. A good mom always deserves a nice new pair of shoes, at the very least. :)

At least you aren't making your kids by their own stuff for school like my parents did!
No worries, my friend, I have a thousand stories that makes you seem like the best parent ever ;)
