Ok. I would like to buy a marco lens that would fit a canon rebel... Any input on what you think the least expensive macro lens would be? and where would I find it? I've found that Quantaray lenses seem to be a little less expensive...but will I be sacraficing quality by not getting the Canon brand?
any info would be GREAT!
Thanks!

I tried the Tamron, the Canon 100mm and the Sigma 105mm macros. Quality was best of what I tried on the Canon and Sigma. Between those two lenses, indistinguishable photos. Great difference in price. I went with the Sigma. Scroll down the lists of posts in this hardware forum, there was a discussion last week about the merits of the various brands. Maybe the couple features the Canon offers makes the price difference worth it to you, it didn't for me.

I'm not so sure about recent stats as it's been a while since I had the money to look, but I really liked the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro because of the Internal Focusing. Just makes a much neater package. Apparently the current 100mm has the fastest focusing as well for use as a general purpose lens. I might use that sometimes, but most people find it too long for that on a 1.6X crop, so stick to manual focusing for macro... This pushes the balance in favor of the 3rd party lenses for sure.

Yido is selling his Tokina 100mm f/2.8. Not sure if it's IF, but at any rate, it's a great lens and at a great price...

Check the buyandsell area...

He typo'd it as a f/1.8 in the thread title, so you should spot it a mile away :)

I thought quantaray was low-end sigma right? or is it just a regional name thing?

I beleive quantaray is a sigma with a different name specifically for Ritz cameras. I think.

You may wish to try out a close up filter lens (like the Canon 500D), if you have a long zoom lens already. It is cheaper and saves carrying an extra lens around in the bag.
