click here for permit info in NYC

If you will be shooting with a tripod anywhere in Manhattan you have to have a permit or your equipment can be taken away. Just a little FYI. See link above.

What's the reasoning behind this? Just curious...

Also, seems like Central Park has a lot of restrictions regarding where tripods can and cannot be used. Is it hard knowing where those boundaries are, and why such a rule?

It isn't to raise money for the city, the permit is free, I think it is just to keep the sidewalks clear plus it gives them your information as to what you are doing and where so if you are a terrorist they know you took a picture to plan your attack.

Personally I get upset when questioned by police since chances are better that I will catch the terrorist with my camera compared to me or someone else using my images to plan a terrorist attack. Misguided efforts to have a show for the ordinary man to feel safer without really increasing their safety. Just my personal opinion.

I'm back in town but up to my ears in shizzle. Keep me posted, I'd love to hook up even if only for a coffee or a beer.

sorry for the delay, i'm up to my ears in shizzle, as well ;-)

i'm staying at the ramada eastside, which is at the corner of lexington & 30th. probably getting settled too late tues to meet up with anyone, but will be hitting the ground running weds am, looking to shoot all day/night.

sounds like the top of the rock is something not to miss. is there anything in particular we have to do other than show up?

any other ideas? if you had 48 weekday hours to shoot, what would you want to shoot?

nick, shannon, jason, michael, steve--ANYONE interested, just let me know.

pm me your phone number and let me know when you might have some time.

I like Top Of The Rock but it's hyper touristy and I'd assume you might want something that you can make your own???

Maybe I'm wrong about that but if you you give me an idea of what your heart's telling you to shoot, I'll do my best to point you in the right direction. Chinatown...SoHo...The East Village are very cool places to get people. Central Park is great for everything.

OK, so what's the deal with permits?!?! I called the Mayor's office and they said we must have a permit if we're shooting for commercial purposes, shooting with a group, using a tripod, or using a non-consumer camera. Now, I don't mind getting a permit, but they won't issue a permit unless I have insurance. WTF?

I'm just a freakin' tourist with a camera you could get at Best Buy. I don't make a nickel off this stuff and I'm shooting on public property. Now what?

Unless you shooting with a tripod in Times Square or The World Financial Center...places like that, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you plant yourself and take 100 pictures they might OR might not bother you but a few quick shots with a tripod usually gains no attention.

Obviously the lady I spoke to was a moron. Despite her insistence, their website says no insurance is required for still photography. I don't think I could even get a permit anyway- since I'm not working for a company or representative and have no idea what locations I'll be in. :-/

Wear a Hawaiian shirt and carry a point-and-shoot?

I suspect you will have to hand hold your camera and try to be as unobtrusive and quick as possible. At least that is what I will be trying in New York this coming weekend.

It might be interesting to compare notes next week to see if anyone had problems with NY security/police and where.

I'm definitely leaving the tripod and L lenses at home!
07/25/2006 01:33:06 PM · #42
i'm not going too sweat it.

i've got a tabletop tripod that i mainly use to brace against walls, pews, rails, etc. it doesn't attract the same attention as the 70-200...

as best i can recall, the permitting has to do with video production (with an underlying assumption that there is going to be a group of people involved).

if it's just a handful of people roaming about, i don't see there being much to worry about.

I never ever worried about a tripod and being questioned. That whole permit thing is bull@#$% its for companies, people shooting commercials. I only get questioned in the park by the brooklyn bridge all the time just tell the guy its not for commercial use its only for you. Then they dont bother you

sent you a pm by the way, yes all you have to do is show up, you may want to shoot the brooklyn bridge, the soho area or china town and maybe a quick trip up to central park.

Hangin' Out Kodak POTD
Guess you'll be at Times Square at some point tomorrow, eh? Congrats....Hmmm....not sure how those jumbletron shots will fit into your stock portfolio, but it's always great to see your name in lights on the Great White Way! ;)

Skip,

Got your voicemail but couldn't make it Wed night. Hope to meet up with you sometime tomorrow after work if you and the crew are still roaming around. Any agenda for tomorrow?

(I realize that computer access may not be possible, so this post may be for nothing...)

shannon came down and we shot nearly all day. can't post up too much stuff because i don't want to 'expose' his action entry...

it was really cool meeting up with steve (pawdrix) and nick (nickolai1024) at central park, and then with ryan (digitalpins) and mike (mprpro) at the top of the rock.

i'm hooking up with JPR this afternoon to probably shoot around midtown/times sq until about 5:30ish, then we're heading down to the financial district to meet up with nick (and hopefully steve and anyone else) to shoot around seaport, brooklyn bridge, etc. i'll check back here around lunch to see if there's anyone new who wants to go.

I'll call you at around 3-4ish and hopefully I can make it, if not have fun. I had a great time, it was nice to finally meet you. Cheers!

Too bad I didn't have my long lens for that little tango that took place at the bottom of the Bethesda shot. Ho hum...

Skip,

I tried calling you last night but didn't get an answer or a voicemail on your cell. Downtown after 5:30 would be great for me (I'm a few blocks north of WTC and get out right around 5:30). Give me a call when you're heading downtown and I'll try to meet up with the group.

Thx
mike
