I just want to know what you think of this image (I know the thumbnail looks to blurry, but look at the larger image and tell me what you think).

I imagine the soft focus effect is deliberate but to me it just looks as though the lens had foggy patches on it! It seems to be soft only in some areas or maybe that's just my eyesight? It doesn't work for me but then I'm not really a fan of focus at the best of times.

I find the blur over the dog distracting; it pulls my eyes away from the subject. The blur on the boys foot looks funny too. I like the shot though; very nice interaction between the boy and the dog. :)

Taking in some of the feedback and trying again. So what do you think? Better or worse?

(it's like going to the eye doctor: 1 or 2? 1 or 2?)

yes, much better... take it to PS, push contrast to about +19 and the brightness down to about -14

I took it into PS and think that is about all it needs, so no need to post it

great job, much better

Thanks everyone. And thanks Amanda. I used your final suggestion but only part way. I didn't like what it did to my boy, so I created a feathered circle around the dog and that way increased the contrast on the dog while keeping the reduced contrast on my boy. Here's my final edit:
