Hey gang...I submitted my very first entry and so far I got 5 comments that ask the same question 'is the out of focus intentional?'

How can I answer this question? Am I allowed to reveal what photo is mine and explain?

But...for everyone else...remember, the 'focus' of this challenge IS negative space.

I'm afraid unless commenters leave their name, you have to wait until the end of the week to answer the question (by commenting on your own photo).

It's very common for a lot of people to comment on the same thing. Often when I'm commenting, I avoid saying certain obvious things because I know the photographer must be sick of hearing about them :). It's just something that goes with the territory of this site.

I won't answer your question, instead I will ask another.

If we were to vote on two identical entries (and I know that's not possible so I do appreciate this is a hypothetical question) which were both out of focus, one intentionally so and the other not, should they be scored any differently?

In my opinion scoring/ voting (on this site) is about the actual photo itself, how well it stands on its own as an image, not as an image _with_ an essay about the photographer's intention.

Of course it's ranking/ performance here is quite separate from how the photographer will feel about it, and that's only normal.

:)

not 100% agree with you kavey ...
True the 'performance' should not be taken in account, like is the photo hard to take .. but we still take care of it a little .. we know that motion picture are not easy to do .. it takes time ...

For the out of focus .... I still ask the question sometimes meaning to tell the photographer : if you did not do it on purpose , be a little more carefull, if you did it on purpose .. I do not get it and I do not like it this way.

So in the '2 same pictures out if focus' .. I would probably rate them not very good, but they woiuld fail for different reason ... supposing that you know the intention of the photographer.

I am rereading my self .. and I am not very clear (and that's not intentional ;-) ) ...

This is one of the biggest problems on this site. Whether or not something like soft focus is intentional is ABSOLUTELY IRRELEVANT.

What is relevant is - does it create an effect that you like?

Even if a blurry photo was an accident, the photographer obviously noticed it before he/she submitted it here. So the fact that it's here means the submitter wants you to see it and rate it. That makes everything intentional by default. It's fine to say you don't like it, and if the photographer is attempting to take photos that are pleasing to large numbers of people then perhaps soft focus is something they should learn to avoid. But to wonder whether it was the photographer's intention is a different matter.

I agree completely. Everything you see on this site must be assumed intentional.
