OUCH! OK, my PC crashed and is refusing to boot. It run chkdsk the first time it tried to reboot and then only goes to the blue screen of death.

It's an XP system. The HD seems OK, and I NEEED to get some files off of it.
I'm searching for either a LiveCD or floppy-based Linux to boot from. Needs to be able to boot and mount a NTFS drive and either burn to DVD or copy to my CF cards. Any suggestions?

I'm looking at Knoppix now.

ETA, transfers over my wireless network to my notebook wouldwork also.

No, it won't finish booting into safe mode either.

New HD, install windows, then connect old HD to system and see if windows will read it.

If you can give me the details of the blue screen, I may be able to help from an XP point of view.

The main info I would need is the first line or two after Stop:...four hex looking numbers.

Actually, that would work, I do have an older PC out in my shop that is bootable.

During the boot, it should give you options like boot normally, Last Known Good, etc.

Try the Last Known Good and see if that will let you boot Windows successfully.

If you don't get the options automatically, you can hit F8 like crazy after the POST until the menu appears.

Fotomann, you need Knoppix my friend. ;-)

Nope...no go...probably because I have system restore turned off. I don't think it'd worked anyway, seems an important file somehow got corrupted.

Actually, I was dealing with yet another Trojan when it went bye bye. I'd tell you what it was, but I don't remember and the name of it was in a notepad file on my desktop ... ooops :-)

Yeah, downloading it now... :-) Is there any easy way to send the files to my notebook once I have the PC booted and the HD mounted?

Here's a little Tutorial which can probably explain it far better than I.

OMG, the PC actually booted... I tried a last known good config again and it's up.

I'm backing up the images I needed off of it to DVD now. Wish me luck, I'm still gonna try to repair windows without a reformat.

I sooooooo don't want to reformat :-( If I can get her to hang on until Vista is released, I'm planning on a new machine.
