Ok, so I have seen people post their medical issues and get some response and I know we have some medical people here so I thought I'd ask -

I have a bad lower back mostly from sins of my youth (motorcycle crashes mostly). Every once in awhile I get a spasm just above my tailbone and occasionally it knocks my legs out from under me and renders me nearly paralyzed. This happened last night and I've pretty much been incpapacitated ever since. I had one emergency vicodin which I have saved for such an occasion and I have an old bottle of naproxen leftover from something my wife was using them for. So far, the vicodin hasn't helped much. I also took Aleve and Doans.

Any recommendations on good over-the-counter meds or even under-the-counter ones? The crappy thing is I can't get a doc to write a prescription unless I go in to see them. Hellloooo, I can't friggin walk here! Just send a courier! :P

Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

-In pain and unable to pillage and plunder

Oh jeez.. slipped disk pinch a nerve?

A co-worker of mine with an already bad back did himself in when he tried to prevent a box of drill core from falling. He's had a numb leg ever since. Can't feel it & had trouble making it work.

Get well soon man!

The best thing you could take would be a muscle relaxer. Doans has some in it, but probably not enough to do what you need it to do.

Try heat. This will likely be your best no-doctor solution.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Stay away from that pillage and plunder stuff. :)

Spine injuries can be nasty - and have some bad neurological effects later on in life. (sorry but you're not getting any younger Ken). I would really recommend getting a ride to the ER. If you cannot even walk, you may just want to call for an ambulance. Thing is, if you have a nerve being pinched you don't want it pinched too long to where it becomes permanently damaged

She works in an ER, don't trust her... LOL. Seriously, she's right, a quick trip to the ER might not be a bad idea.

Depending on how bad it is, not much OTC medicine will do a lot to dull the pain (based on my experiences with my man's back). A few things that do actually help in small ways are:

Icy Hot Patches (or any other brand)...those that you peel and stick on for a few hours at a time...those seem to help a little. You can opt to put any of the various muscle rubs on there (the cream or ointment kind).

Heating pad or hot water bottle

Ice pack

Massage (especially with one of those knobby or rounded massagers)

Stretching (careful stretching, but stretching nonetheless)

Relaxation and deep breathing exercises (much like breathing for labor and delivery)

You really should get it looked at by a doctor...we've been to several and have finally gotten a neurosurgeon willing to work on all five of the herniated discs in his back. She just operated on the two in his neck (C5 and C6) and the results have been phenomenal so far. She'll be operating on L1, L2, and L3 next month (we hope) to further reduce his back pain. I hope you find some relief for yourself because pain is no fun for you and it really impacts the family as a whole. {{hugs...but not too tight}}

I think your back hurts from rolling around on the floor laughing your A$$ off all the time. haha I had a pinched nerve in my back a few years ago. Hurt like crazy some days and others didn't even know it was there. Then I finally went to the doc and got it taken care of. Which is my advice to you. Go See a Doctor if it is nerve damage you will feel alot better once it is treated.

It provides a natural kick-stand if he wants to lay on his side relieving some of the preasure on his back.

If you scroll a bit you'll see I did give some very serious advice - even though I am not a doc I do work in the medical field and see a lot of patients with back trouble.

I am an Emergency Medical Technician, and I do not play one on TV...
I always advise on the side of caution... Better to see a physician and it be nothing but a pulled muscle, than to be something serious and leave it untreated.... go to the ER, if you cannot walk, please call an ambulance... thats what we're here for!

Good luck! And get well soon!

I believe what you're experiencing could be Sciatica: a sudden strong pain as well as weakness, numbness, or other discomfort along the sciatic nerve - from lower back down to legs.

Happens to most adults and often to women during the later stages of pregnancy.

Not an awful lot of 'real' medical remedies out there, but laurelblack gives some good self help tips. It's only temporary, just keep up a good pain management routine with codeine or paracetamol to get you through.

I've also found that alternating hot and cold works well too.

Because hot helps relax any muscle spasms and cold helps reduce any inflammation.
Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen need to be taken regularly for a few days to get the inflammation relief.
If you sleep on your back, use a pillow under your knees, if you sleep on your side, put it between your knees.
And SEE YOUR DOCTOR as soon as you can. Depending on the problem, he may also be able to give you some specific exercises that help strengthen the other supporting muscles, including those that run to the front, not just the back.

Aleve and naproxen are the same thing ;)

Just wanted to chime in Art to say I don't have a lot of experience with pain meds. My first instinct would be to say muscle relaxant (prescription) or anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aleve).

Sorry I'm not much help...

I believe the official answer is: Tequilla/

Most likely the ducks tail isn't providing proper lumbar support.
