I'm venting:

I go to the Rutland "mall" tonight, and I use the term "mall" loosely, because unless you're shopping for overpriced trendy clothes, you can't get anything you want. Just last week I swore off going there after the Walden's Bookstore didn't have any of the three semi-classics I was after.

But...tonight is a perfect night, and I have a perfect spot up on the nearby marsh, and I want to do a long exposure sunset/twilight shot. All I have is a Circular Polarizer for my 18-55, which doesn't darken it enough. I need two Neutral Density +2 filters. Shouldn't be that hard.

I get in my car and go to the mall, thinking, "Well, this is such a simple thing, the Ritz store is sure to have at least one that's the right size." I get inside, and guess what... The Ritz Camera store is CLOSED! As in, out of business closed. Gonzo. Which means that the nearest camera store is now the Ritz in Burlington, almost 2 hours away.

AAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!

Granted, the one in Rutland was understocked and staffed by less than knowledgable people (big surprise), but at least it was something. Now I'm really stranded. I cannot wait until I get back to university in Binghamton, where there's a great little camera shop almost right across from campus.

Until then, I hereby swear, with DPC as witness, that I will NEVER again give this piece of crap town another cent of business if I am able to avoid it. I will happly pay shipping from Katmandu, if only to screw the (remaining) business' here over just a little.

This isn't the first time they've done this to me. When I got my Rebel (via mail) I went to Staples to get a CF card. Every card I could want, except a SanDisk Ultra II 512. Which is the exact one I wanted. When I asked, I got a dumb look. Finally got the clerk to look it up, she tells me, "We're out." No shit, Sherlock (didn't actually say that)- when's the next shipment? Her reply, "Never. We don't plan to restock them. They didn't sell good." **screams**

Okay, I think I'm done venting, now that you're all convinced that I am, indeed, a complete raving psycopathic lunatic.

A pox on Rutland.
A pox on Ritz Camera
A pox on the Staples sales clerk
A pox on anyone else who annoys me tonight

Okay, I'm really done....*sigh*

Since you didn't pox UPS, then BHPhoto is your friend (unless you try to order on Saturdays :P )

Aye mate, just placed my order with them. :-) Should have just done it from the start.

Long live B&H!

Yeah, B&H pretty much wins hands down for me. I can't get something within the hour but I can get something overnighted, still have it be cheaper than my local photo store and not have to deal with snotty customer service people.

Its just as well the store was closed altogether....it would save you the frustration of not finding the ND filters in the store. The 5 stores in my immediate vicinty can "Get them for you". You can get them sans tax on line from them or, better yet, B&H as suggested. Get an extra CF card or two while you're at it. ;)

Let's see...

You bought your camera through "the mail", you bought your CF card " at Staples", and you complain how the local camera store is low on stock and marvel at the fact that it is out of business?

And then you take the time to get on this forum and bitch about the town of Rutland??

How much of your gear did you buy at Ritz? How much at your local store if not Ritz?

How can we expect out local camera stores to stay in business if we don't shop there?

Now, I don't blame you at all for complaining at all about Ritz Camera Shops. I hate them.

But don't you dare complain about Rutland. It may suck now, but it was a great little town when I grew up there. So, lay off. ;D

It's worth pointing out that back when I was aquiring my equipment last summer, I would gladly have bought it local. In fact, I like to do that whenever I can - in NY now, not VT. My beef with Rutland began when I couldn't get ANY of the equipment I needed locally, or possibly even in-state.

I wish there were another little, local camera store - if there were, and it were half decent, I'd probably be their best customer when I was in-state. However, with the demise of Ritz, there's nothing at all. And as far as Ritz went, I actually did a little business there when possible, because it's all there was.

As much as I love B&H, I do like little stores too. In NY, I'm thrilled to go to the shop near campus and get stuff there - even if it costs a bit more. It's better for me, it's better for them - everyone wins. See, I'm not a total jerk ;-)

Most of my rant came from repeated shopping trips where I come home emptyhanded, unable top find common items around here. It gets frustrating when just can't find CF cards/notebooks/shelving units/clothing that fits/etc.

And as for your growing up in Rutland, I offer my deepest condolances ;-) Just kidding - sort of. It is a pretty place, and sorta' quiet. But having been here the better part of 20 years, I am at the point where I don't much care to see it again. Especially as it is starting to slide into a deeper, uglier state than anytime in the past, which is truely sad to see.

At least you have a camera store just 2 hours away. I think the closest one to me would be in Green Bay, WI - about 4 1/2 hours away

Hey man, I grew up across the lake from you, in Plattsburgh, NY. Also, SUNY Binghamton was on the list of universities I was considering, mostly because if I had gone there I would have been given a partial scholarship. Small world eh.

It's a trade-off. In small-town Vermont you don't have to deal with the crowds & traffic like I do in the Toronto area, but you don't have easy access to gear. Easy access can be a curse to someone like me. I tend to 'drop in' to shops just to look around, but end up dropping large sums of $$ on fandango nicknacks.
