Okay...on the heels of the "most challenges w/ no ribbon" thread, I got to wondering about the next quesiton.....Who has the highest average vote received (with say 20 or more challenges entered) without a ribbon?
07/17/2006 12:50:36 PM · #2
I would guess Dax-

A 5.9259 average after 29 challenges, a stunning portfolio, and not even an honorable mention to show for it.

Technically my average is 6.0107 and never ribboned - but then I've only entered 1 challenge so...

This will likely favor those that haven't entered much.

Yeah, she's already in my list of favourites. Incredible portfolio.

And searching through most of my other favourites, I couldn't find anyone else with an average that high, after that many challenges that hadn't ribboned.

The only explanation I can come up with is that her images are usually quite stylised, and relatively abstract. I guess that although she gets rated highly for the beauty of her work, she probably doesn't win because her shots aren't overtly related to the theme of the challenge.

Still, if I had a portfolio like that, I wouldn't really care much about ribbons...

The former title holder was Anastasia with a 6+ average, but she has since ruined her perfect record. Twice. ;-)

Well, I won't disagree about Dax being better than I (much better in fact), I will argue that she doesn't have the highest average without a ribbon. ;)

Dammit! Hey, how well are you doing in your current challenges? I may just pass you and still not ribbon! :P

ETA: You have a 7+ image which disqualifies you. That should have ribboned! :P

Thanks Yanko!

Getting low 5s in both Perspective and Abstract Food, so no chance there. Maybe I'll drop into 2nd place behind you for not having ribboned. I'm feeling pretty good about my Beach entry, so maybe I'll get lucky there.

OK, well, I have 105 challenges, no ribbons and a 5.5447 average... not close to 5.95, but then quite a few more challenges.

Hey, I just want to celebrate my ribbonless exsistence...

Those are some very nice portfolios. I'd love to get a ribbon one day, but I don't have time to enter too often. My average score is definitely improving, however - so that's a good sign. I'll hit a "7" one of these days.

I know gladly concede the title of "Highest Average without a Ribbon" to Yanko!

You go boy!

Well, I've got and Avg Vote Cast: 5.4799
& missed the honorable mention Top 10 by one place.

But I'd be curious to know the "highest ranking photo w/out a ribbon"

This is my highest avg with no ribbon at 6.388

Yep. I'd say that looks right: Browse Highest Rated Photographs

That'll be fourth place in the first Masters' Free Study then - a challenge I think most would agree suffered from distorted voting.

Only thing about all the ribbons vs. no ribbons vs. challenges entered, is that some will only enter here & there, taking no chances on trying something new, or stepping out of their comfort zone. Not saying there is anything wrong with that, just statistics aren't everything.
Now someone keeping a high average, entering say 75% of the challenges, says versatility and a willingness to try new things.

What is everything, is to have fun, spread your wings and experiment.
Who knows - you may even find that elusive niche you have been searching for.

(back to my hunt for nekkid chicks so I can spread my wings even more)

Nicely said Brad. I find it continuously disappointing that so many very good photographers stay carefully within their comfort zones, as though the statistics were at all important. I'm sure if some of these people were more prepared to experiment - to 'challenge' themselves - we would all find the end result far more interesting.

There are, of course, a few exemplary exceptions to this statement.

Challenges Entered: 12
Avg Vote Received: 5.8132

Between January of this year (when I became a member) and March I entered 12 challenges. I didn't plan on it, but of my top 7 entris, 6 were of animals and 5 of those were birds.

I finally decided to start entering challenges again, and my beach entry is a definite step out of what I didn't realize must be my comfort zone.

Oh, and by the way, it's currently at 6.4133 with 150 votes. Not a ribbon winner either, but it will improve my "Average w/no ribbon".
07/20/2006 05:59:37 PM · #25
with almost 300 challenges and a 5.12 average, to move my average up or down, it would take a bunch of good votes or bad votes. So, my average hasn't changes much for quite sometime. But I've tried all kinds new of things with challenges that I wouldn't haved tried and could care less about getting a ribbon. Maybe someday I may luck into a ribbon though. Van
