Last day of vacation in New Hampshire yesterday and I discovered this critter in the grill cover I was unfolding to put back on the grill.

Grabbed the camera and took a couple of handheld shots.

Anybody know what kind of spider this is?

Thanks!

Thanks. That's what I was thinking too. Haven't looked it up yet - sometimes DPC can be the best resource out there, and besides, I get to post an image at the same time! ;^)

I'll check back later for any follow-ups...need to hit the sheets, it's been a long day of travel and unpacking.

I dunno guys, I don't think thats a wolf spider. Or well maybe, there are different breeds of wolf spiders, but I don't think this looks much like the native Missouri wolf spiders.

Yep. There are many types of wolf spiders and this one is definitely different than the ones you see in Missouri. We go to Eminence Mo every year (heard of it?) and have to clear the wolf spiders out in the cabin before my wife will even consider lying down at night.

This is a little Colorado Wolf Spider I caught last year. Have a Black Widow out front in a jar fattening up for a photo shoot too.

Can't say I blame her after getting an up close look! ;^)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Glad to know what it is.

If you've got spider pics to share - go for it.

Great shot, but ick. I HATE spiders. I find ones like that in my shed all the time - at which point, I shoot them. *shudders* Oh, I hate spiders...

Yikes! Were you using extension tubes? Reverse lens hook-up?

It's about that time of year...

There's a really scary spider here in Taiwan that's been kicking around lately. It's about the size of an average man's hand (maybe a tiny bit smaller) and moves FAST.

It is NOT afraid of people...

A friend of mine went on the balcony of his apt to do laundry and when he went back, there was one on the back of the door. He grabbed a mop to 'dispose of it' (having seen one before and knowing how fast they move and noticing that neither was afraid of him).

He took a swing and it calmly jumped onto the top of the mop, unharmed.

He claims that he hucked the broom towards one of the railings on his balcony and hung on to the mop as it smacked the handle part, flinging the spider off into the night (from the 4th floor)...

Scary because they are fast...

Afterwards we asked the locals and nobody knew their Chinese name... No way to look it up...

If you insist. I've only got one and didn't do great for the challenge but always thought was a cool shot.

I use the Sigma 105mm macro with 50mm revesed on it. :-)

Is that a full-frame image, or cropped? I'm thinking I have a fine excuse here to pick up a 50mm PDQ! ;^)

OK, so a wolfy it is. The part of missouri Im in (the backwoods), a wolf spider don't have the dots, or not typically anyway.

I think they have what would resemble a violin on their back. They are flat looking, and very large spread, and I think some of them could take a shot with a .22 and live. I'd rather be in the room with an alligator.

Thanks for the nightmares mates. Especially the one where I see a close up of those eight devil eyes, (do I see a camera in one of those eyes?)

We have large wolf spiders here in Nebraska, I have seen some with a leg span about the size of a small tarantula. I hate spiders period. The ones with the violin shape on them, be very afraid of. Sounds like a brown recluse spider, which are very common in the midwest, and they rank right up there with the black widow. A lot of bites do require surgery for skin grafts. Again, I hate spiders, but I do have a pet snake in the house (5 foot Ball Python). Only once I have woke up in the morning with it under my pillow next to my arm. Its only gotten out 3 times
