John and I have 3.6 minutes... Your time is less than half of what the tap alone can do, which isn't possible since the tap is faster than the hose by a third...

- Your neighbor's hose

** extra credit for a really cool water drop / splash shot in the tank

also please leave the EXIF info intact so we could help you with a better answer :p

All three of you: hands on the tap. When I count to 3, fill the tank. Let us know how long it takes. One... Two... THREE!

I'll be back shortly. All this talk has made me have to pee...

Opps did it wrong, let me check again.

3.6 minutes

Flow A/min. x 6 min. = Volume

Flow B/min. x 9 min. = Volume

therefore, (Flow A)*6 = (Flow B)*9

Flow B = 2/3*Flow A

Combined flow = Flow A + 2/3*Flow A = 5/3 Flow A

((5/3)*Flow A)/min. x 6 min. = Volume

Then, Flow A/min. x ((3/5)*6)min. = Volume

Answer: 3.6 minutes.

Maths sucks.

:\

Can y'all quit repeating "3.6" for the love of Pete? Everyone is getting that as a subliminal message and using it to vote on my picture in Abstract Food. ;)

Yeah, that's why I did it the practical way :-) It's easier...

::hands on hips and strict MOM face::

Ok you guys you know who you are!! Get your eyes on your own math books and do your OWN work!!

On another note.... why join a photography site just to ask us to do your math home work and do we have a parental permission slip fo ryou to be here ?

Hey, Di: he apparently didn't have anyone he could ask for help at that late hour, so he turned to us. A couple of us took the trouble of explaining two approaches to HOW to solve the problem. Which presumably is what he was asking for. Hmmph :-) It seems perfectly OK to me, lawd knows I can remember doing plenty of this stuff with my own kids lo, these many years ago...

I feel as far as education is concerned, one should ask anywhere. I do not mind asnwering if i could.
I remember in CAT exam in india , we get less than 40 sec to solve such problems (actually these are of simpler types). :-)

Sometimes, when my kids ask what I did at work today, I answer "math" and/or "spelling" and go into as much detail as I can without losing their attention. It's true, and hopefully it'll prevent them from being the 'those' kids at school who quip about learning something they'll never use.

Yea, I'm probably going to have to stretch the truth as well when I get asked the question.

More accurately, "well son, I surfed the net and asked the gurus at DPChallenge.com..."
Hey, we're the next "AskJeeves(tm)", but even better because we are real people and not computer scripts, lol!

You should have turned to Tom Lehrer, an actual mathematics professor, for help with New Math.

It is simple.
Imagine Total work i.e to fill water tank is 100 % work.
So if you fill the tank in 6 minutes using tap it means you are doing 100/6= 16.6% of work per minute.

If you use your neigbours hose it means you are doing 100/9 = 11.11 % of work in a minute.

If you use both Tap and hose it means you are doing 11.11 + 16.66 = 27. 27 % of work in a minute.

Therfore 100 % of work will be done in = 100/27.27 = 3.6 hours.

Damn, 3.6 HOURS? How did we miss that? jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

3.6 mins will be correct in theory, but inaccurate in practical. There are many factors that may eventually effect the total time needed to fill the tank :p (I'm just being anal, lol)

edit: oops

Right, but 3.6 minutes not hours.
