I've really been looking to get a DSLR for quite some time now, and have been keeping close tabs on all threads relating to people asking about them. But now it is my turn. I have the money, and a few questions of my own.

1. I've been checking out sites and their prices, and some post a $100 manufacturers rebate. I'm either going to buy from buydig.com or B&H, but neither of these show this rebate in their prices. Is it still good?

2. I'm probably going to go for the kit. Or can I save another $100 (about) and get the body only, and then find a nice, all-around lens for about $200? I'm not looking to spend tons of money, but I like quality, and many have said the kit lens just isn't that great...but if it takes decent pictures, I'll be happy

Thanks for your help!

well, that is sad news indeed, but thank you.

I guess I have another question as well...is anyone looking to upgrade that has a 350D in excellent condition?

I reckon that the kit lens would most likely be as good as any other lens that you could pick up for $200.

Any other zoom lens yes, probably.

If you're concerned about the picture quality from the kit lens, then have a look at these terrible shots taken with it :)

I'm going to Europe for 4 months to travel, and need a lens that will fit my needs there...I don't really know what exactly I would be using it for, just taking pictures of 'stuff' I guess, haha. What about the kit lens and then another with more zoom? or just the body and then two fixed lenses?

Don't judge the quality of a lens by a VERY resized image on a website. You can tell nothing of the quality of a lens after it's downsized and edited.

I started with the original Rebel and the kit lens. Very good for all around shooting and to learn how to play with a dslr. You'll find you'll want a telephoto after a month or so. The one I got was the 70-200 f/4L and I've been very happy with it. I may end up selling it shortly, though, and getting an IS version, as I'm sold on IS (for folks who are getting a bit older and have problems holding the camera still, it's marvelous).

If you can wait about two weeks, Canon may start up another "cash back" deal. No guarantees, but they do seem to run them fairly frequently. Or I just saw a pretty good price at Best Buy this week, too - $899 before a $45 "instant savings" as one of this week's specials. Good luck - it's all fun!

Haha, thanks Acrotide....my fears are subdued. And thanks for the info Melethia....would you consider selling that lens to me? (assuming I get the camera first :)

haha, and just one more thing....I see all the ads on t.v. for ABC Warehouse...."We'll beat any deal" Does that mean if I walk in the store with a printout of the B&H price, will they beat it? Or does it have to be an actual 'store' deal?
07/16/2006 01:13:12 PM · #12
Probably has to be a "store" deal. I know that several of the price match guarantees around here only honor those from "brick & mortar" stores. (I tried it with the Internet price printout and it didn't work...)

Not only does it have to be a brick and mortar store, but often it also has to be one near them for them to honor a price match.

thanks again!

Go with BH. Buy the body only and get you a good walkaround lens like the 28-135-IS. Also a couple of 1 gig CS cards. Or buy the body and I will sell you the kit lense for $25 dollars.. Seriously. Been trying to get rid of it. With haze filter. But you have to pay shipping should be cheap..
