My camera only goes up to 7.9, so I would be excluded from yet another equipment challenge...

I think this is a great idea! So what if not all the challenge entries can be expected to have the same DOF effect at f8? Would make voting more interesting, that's for sure.
Only hope the challenge description would point the DOF thing out though, to assure voters that DOF isn't a defining factor for DNMC.

I love this idea. Maybe it can run simultaneously with an f/4.0 or f/2.8 challenge. That would be so cool!

I prefer to have a choice of which exclusive to enter. :P

Well unfortunately, that's not *always* going to be the case. Sometimes you have to make due with what you have... or get a camera that's capable of f/8.

Cause that's always a feasible option...
My camera does go to F8.0, but I do understand where karma is coming from. I was not happy when Bokeh and 30 second chellenge popped up int he same week. Hm... neither choice makes me bitter. One "choice" would make me half bitter.

Why don't I go buy a camera capable of f/8? What makes you think I (or anyone else in my situation) have the disposible income to throw as such an investment right now? How about you buy it for me? I saw a D70 kit on eBay today for $1,200. Considering my bills and empty pantry, buying a special camera just to participate in a challenge would be financially irresponsible :P
I really don't appreciate being made to feel inferior. The have-nots are sidelined just so that the popular rich kids can show off. Statements like yours are nothing more than "neener neener, I'm cooler than you, live with it" and challenges that rely on technicalities that cannot be faked and that are subsequently subjected to validation only serve to endorse that sort of thinking. You take away my choice of whether or not to participate in a challenge, a privilege I have PAID for. I've never been a fan of those sorts and never will be.

You guys could argue...
Or you could read my post that suggested that we have simultaneous Basic challenges of f/8 and f/2.8 or f/4, which ought to include pretty much everyone. How does that sound?

Except for maybe the people who can't set the aperature. Unfortunately it's going to happen when you start putting strict restrictions on challenges. I don't think this idea is bad, and I am all for it actualy, but I personally think all challenges like this one should be made as extra challenges.

lol. Just because you're not a fan of something, or aren't completely enthused about something that happens doesn't mean you have to run around telling everyone else they're not allowed to have their fun.
If you need a truck because you haul stuff a lot, and you can only afford an old beat up 1990 s-10 pickup with a 4-cylinder...would you go tell your neighbor he wasn't allowed to go race his mustang with a v8 just because you didn't have one too?
--
Furthermore, I would never rub it in anyone's face that my camera or lenses may be 'better' or more expensive than anyone else's. You're right, I have some expensive gear, but I've worked hard to pay for my gear and that's that.
Like I said, I would never talk down on anyone just based on the camera that they could afford, or anything else they could or couldn't afford for that matter. Now at the same time, I wouldn't ask other people to buy me a camera...or peanut butter for that matter....that's just not how I am.
So anyway, I apologize if I have offended you, but in all honesty, I can't see where I have said anything that could be considered offensive by anyone. If you have a camera capable of shooting at f/8, enter the challenge. If you don't, select the other challenge, or sit that week out. It's not that big of a deal.
Furthermore, while still on the topic, you don't have to spend $1200 to be able to shoot at f/8.

How about a totally FIXED challenge? . . .
50mm focal length, f/8 aperture, 1/250 sec exposure, ISO 100.
Aren't there some DSLRs that go as low as ISO 100? If so, then let's make it ISO 200.
It would be interesting to see what various types of photos would be taken, given those constraints.

I say we just scrap the f/8 idea and do f/64. |

It's a cool challenge, but it won't happen, because someone might feel left out.
