I'm getting a book printed with a load of my photos in. I'm going to use it at an art exhibition to try to sell prints and get myself known, but I will also be taking orders for the book if anybody there is interested in buying it. Since it is a local thing, the majority of the photos are taken locally, with a few from other places if I really like them a lot.

Since people could be buying it, I've included a bit about me on the inside. Here is what I've written:

BEN ROBERTS

Ben is a local Photographer to the South West, living in Clevedon and Bristol, which is where a lot of his photographs are taken. He also has a wide range of work from his travels.

He started getting into photography in 2002, and now shoots digital, mostly with his Canon EOS-300D. He is versatile, and talented in many areas, including landscape, architecture, still life, and even abstract art.

He has won a number of prizes, including the "Imagine" Digital Photography Competition, set up by the BBC and the Wellcome Trust in 2003. He has also had a photo featured in the BBC series, "A Digital Picture of Britain".

Locally, his photography was first recognised when he was hailed as "The New Bailey" by the Clevedon Mercury after winning their local photography competition with his photo, "The Bird Man".

Internationally, Ben has also performed well, winning or placing in a number of online competitions, competing against hundreds of other photographers worldwide.

I've put it on the inside cover so that people will open it and find out about me, but now I don't have anything on the back! I was thinking maybe a short description of the book, and some quotes from people saying what they think?

I've posted the preliminary page layout here: //productiondiary.blogspot.com

If you could take a look, let me know what you think, and then maybe write something I could quote from you, I'll pick the best ones to put on the back cover of the book. If anyone has any idea what else I could write on the back, I'd love to hear it. I'll probably accompany it with a photo of me or something. I'll also get some quotes from local people who know the areas I'm photographing, to balance it out.

All opinions welcome! (But only nice ones will be published, hehe)

Ben, since I've long, long considered you my cybernephew, I'd really love to provide a quote for the back of the book. I'll IM you.

Just a suggestion, but I'd leave out the "mostly with his Canon EOS-300D" and replace it with something like the Canon EOS system, etc. That way you wont date the book.

Oo good plan! I purposely avoided putting my age, or that I'm at university for that very reason. Thanks :)

Have sent a quote and fiddled with your text.

I don't know you, but i'd just like to add praise to your book (in prototype).
It looks very professional, and I myself being a 20 year old trying to gt into photography it's nice to know that it can be done.
Very impressed.
Oh by the way, I'm Ben aswell.

I would love to be in the book...only if you can find something of mine that is worthy enough of making it!

Angela, Ben isn't looking for photographic content - the photos in the book will be his own. He's looking for quotes about his work/ talent for use on the back cover of his book. :o)

Ok how is this for a re-edit:

Since he first became interested in photography several years ago, Ben has igained a lot of experience, and improved his equipment and his portfolio, and now now shoots with a Canon DSLR and lenses.

Looks great Ben! I really like the photo of you by the pier with your bio. And maybe like you said, at the back have another photo of you, maybe a small classic b/w headshot so people can get a visual of whos photos their looking at.

For my tastes, I like the photo of the monkeys, but I would prefer something different next to that beautiful architecture shot. Something equally as powerful (especially since it's the first couple pages) to really get the viewers attention and draw them further into the book, and put the monkeys more in the middle, maybe with the meerkat photo. It's a great photo that should be included in the book, but maybe just a different place. Just my thoughts, as I'm no expert on this. Really nice and professional looking book Ben.

Ben, what a great looking book!

For your photographer information, I would leave out the second paragraph. If you want to talk about equipment, you might mention that you utilize digital technology and are always educating yourself on the latest in equipment advancements.

Excellent job on the photographs.

Good Luck with the book project Ben.

For the back cover I would put a decent portrait shot of yourself and mabye a quote from you, such as

"My eyes see, my camera speaks"

I am certain you could come up with a decent quote!

best of luck Ben, I have no doubt you will make it.

Mike

I would drop the word "online " in the last paragraph.
...... Additionall, his talent has been recognised in a number of international photography competitions.

For starters

I would change this

Ben is a local Photographer based in the South West of England where a lot of his photographs are taken. He also has a wide range of work from his travels around the world.

To this

Ben is a local Photographer based near Bristol where the majoritiy of his work is sourced. Ben has also producded work from his worldwide travels.

--it does not sound correct - being a local photog based in the South West of England - you need to identify more with a much smaller locality --

And Change this

Since he first became interested in photography several years ago, Ben has gained a lot of experience, improved his equipment and his portfolio and now shoots with a Canon DSLR and lenses

To this

Since dipping his toe into the waters of Photography several years ago Ben has shown a natural talent and a keen 'eye' for photography. Through hard work and sacrifice Ben has managed to progress from the more basic cameras to a Digital SLR platform. His Portfolio reflects his immense talent and the undoubted potential waiting to be unleased on the world of photography.

--improved his equipment sounds err odd! --

No doubt between us all Ben can chop and change and get some good stuff to work on.

SO where are you going to get the book published? I've seen a number of different sites that will publish a coffee table book for you with varying prices/quality.

I think it would be a good idea to not even include anything about the camera equipment you are using.

That's what I want to know also.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I've changed the text all around a bit, with suggestions from Kavey, Mike, Artan, and John, and also swapped the monkey image with the pier image, which definately works a lot better :)

I'll try and come up with some kind of fancy quote with deep meaning and stuff but I'm not good at that kinda creative stuff :P I'll take a posh looking self portrait tomorrow too for the back cover :)

I'm getting the book printed at MyPhotoBook.co.uk, who offer a good price (£20 for 36 full bleed colour pages) and a variety of styles. I'm going for the ring bound one, rather than a hard or soft back, since it is easier to turn the pages and hold it open for display purposes, but if anyone is interested in buying a book I'd probably go for the hardback option I think. Any opinions on that choice?

Still looking for a few quotes to put on the back from other people if anyone wants to big me up! Hehe :)

Good idea... would I need to remove the quotation marks if I alter their quote?
