25 comments and 216 voters. I think it is fewer than usual. Not complaining, just grateful to those that have left comments. Thanks, you guys are terrific. |

What with having no ADSL till end of Tuesday and having to catch up with over a week's worth of personal and work emails and tasks I started voting pretty late.
All done now.
But I doubt I'll have time to go through and comment every photo like usual.
I'll comment some if I can, and if anyone would like to know the score I have given their photo or to have comments on it, just email me.

Hi folks. I was wondering about this very topic earlier. I have 8 comments but, nothing especially constructive. Only 1 asking "what is it?"
I have to admit to making fewer comments on candid and I am having a tougher time with F&V commenting also. I usually comment on 60+ and not in any particular order. I do all the voting first. Then go back and review and if something comes to mind while I'm looking at a picture I throw in a comment.
I've also been much busier this week than usual and haven't spent as much time at dpchallenge. I don't even have a negative space shot yet and the few ideas I've had so far look like c*@%.
Hoping to have nice weather and high energy tomorrow and Saturday. That will definitely enhance the creative juices.
Maybe we are all getting so good at this there is just less insightful comments necessary. Think? LOL
Have a nice night....

The "What is it?" is prob mine isn't it? I made it a short while ago today...
Now knowing what it is hasn't impacted my score by the way, I am just curious.

I've now made 66 comments. Well my counter shows I've made 130 but some of those are just score given and my name. 66 include real comments.
I haven't time to make proper comments on all this week.

I've gotten 13 comments for about 200 votes. It's odd because someone told me that I get more comments the better I do. This is the best I have done, and probably one of the worst ratios of comments to votes.
Interestingly enough, the two new comments I have received today are "I don't like (two elements)" and "I really like (the same two elements" Go Fig!

I have 7 comments in 208 votes. That is way down from normal, which reflcts my score this week! |

I have 10 comments on 198 votes. My score is 5.828 and its the highest rated photo so far that i have submitted, so i am happy. Its a far cry from the 32 comments i got from the corporate world challenge, which was my first submission, but i just go with the flow.

I'm at 23 for 208. Almost all are great comments. Most recent one bugged me though. Something about my fruit not being fresh enough...PLEASE people don't vote a pict on the freshness of the fruit. The challenge is not to get the most perfect fruit to take a pict of! Stop trying to find unreasonable faults to a photo. That person gave it a 6, which is not that bad, but is it based on the photo or the fruit? Most of my other comments have been so wonderful with 8's 9's and 10's!

If I was going to hang a picture of fruit, then I would want the fruit to look nice and fresh, making an attractive picture. If your fruit is not so nice to look at then that does take away from the overall picture surely! I am on 17 comments from 205 votes, looks like it will be my lowest score to date but oddly one of my favourite pictures to date! Figure that out!

At the risk of angering someone, I'm going to post my opinion on the subject:
I went and looked at the user profiles of the participants in this thread. To this point there have been 30 participants in this thread, not counting myself. One of those has never commented nor entered a challenge, leaving 29 who have commented and received comments.
Of those 29 participants, 17 have left fewer comments than they have received.
I'm now throwing out for discussion the idea that if we have complaints about the number and quality of comments, the solution is no further than our own keyboards, and I don't mean complaining about it in the forums. I'll make the argument that a net receiver of comments has little right to complain about the number of comments, as by not making as many comments as you get,you are, at least in theory, part of the problem rather than part of the solution. I would further argue that if we as photographers do not comment, we are relying on non-photographers to comment and therefore should accept the quality of comments that we get. Again, if we want to improve the quality of comments, the solution lies in our own hands. We understand the fundamentals of photography and should be willing to share that knowledge for the benefit of our peers.
I bet if all of those 17 participants worked at evening up their ratios, a lot of the complaintsabout comments would go away.
Also, on a more positive note, thank you all of you who have made comments, especially the 12 net contributors and especially kee who has made an astounding 1.578 comments... WOW!
-Terry

what he said! ... runs off and checks profile just to make sure ... very well phrased, terry, and a point well made.
just one comment, and i don't think you meant it the way it could be read ... the non-photographers can also contribute quality comments, not just the photographers. :)

It may not be that the vote was lowered BECAUSE the fruit wasn't fresh but but because it made for a less attractive photo. Since one part of the vote is about how attractive the voter finds the photo overall, and fresh fruit can often be more visually appealing than old wrinkled fruit, the comment seems relevant to me. When we see a good photo, which we think can be made even better by a small change to the contents, shouldn't we comment? It may be that other viewers prefer the content as it is, but does that make other viewpoints less valid?

What ClubJ Said :)
I have 6 comments, but won't complain since I've only left 12 so far. I always score all photos without commenting (mostly) then go back and start at the bottom and work my way up. Time has been in short supply so far this week, but the weekend is coming. I plan to get at least 12 more comments out before I go to the top of my votes and give out the "Wow... Solid 10" comments.
It would be nice if everyone that had an issue with low number of comments would comment themselves to commenting on AT LEAST the lowest 12 shots they scored. If you scored it low, there must be something you think would improve the shot.
Ask not what DPC can do for you... Ask what you can do for DPC...

It is mea culpa (from which we get the word culpable).
I've been travelling the last month and haven't left too many comments lately, but should be back "up to speed" by next week. I usually comment as I go through the pictures the first time. I would also like to remind people that you can even go back after a challenge is over and add comments to a photo (I just got a couple of those which were very specific and helpful). I think it's sometimes easier to make a useful comment without the "pressure" of voting on 200 images. |

Many of my comments are very simple. Some just say that I like it! But I do not feel qualified to give a true critical critique. I'm barely more experienced than the average schmoe! What I think is "poor execution" might be intentional and then I'll feel like a schmuck for not knowing that. And I'll only comment if the photo calls to me in some way... both good ways AND bad ways.

You are the only one qualified to give your opinion. Please note the difference beween Needs more contrast and I'd prefer more contrast
I might or might not agree if I got the second comment, but it wouldn't bother me at all to get it from anyone.

I am delighted to have received 15 comments so far out of 204 votes. I am amused by the fact that two or three offer diametrically opposed opinions! That's natural - what one person finds appealing, someone else may find unappealing.
Also, it's interesting to read the different criteria people use to award a score - would I buy this photo, is it something I'd hang on my wall etc. I am a relatively recent member of this site and am still working out how best to judge the wide variety of fascinating entries in each challenge ... I have judged the fruit & veg challenge entries according to their visual appeal plus how technically well taken I think they are (lighting, focus, dof etc.)
I would note that an entry's applicability to the current challenge has been much easier to judge for the recent Pencil and current Fruit & Veg challenges than may be the case for the Negative Space challenge ...
On another related topic: A couple of contributors to this thread have mentioned giving and receiving the comment "What is it?" - I'd be interested to hear if people mark lower/higher if they are unable to identify a subject or does the identifiability/mystery not play a role in their judging?
Thank you to those who have taken the trouble to comment on my entry - every comment is greatly appreciated! |

Digi Speaking for myself, I have made a comment "What is it?" on one photo. It hasn't impacted my voting because it's very clear it's a fruit or vegetable of some kind, I just like to know what as I love fruit of all kinds and I don't recognise it!
