Problem 1: I think there's something wrong with the calculation... I can't make the numbers add up. If I add up the all my scores and then divide by the number of scores, it doesn't add up to the "Avg Vote Received" number shown in my profile. I've also tried rounding to 2 decimal places before adding them up but that doesn't work either.
Problem 2: And the "number of challenges entered" says 16 but I count 18 challenges on my profile. I thought the count may have had something to do with Problem 1 but it doesn't.
Suggestion: I've noticed that users who start in their first few challenges with fairly good pictures will wind up over the long run having a much better "Avg Vote Received" stat, then users who made a few mistakes their first few times. That's because as you enter more and more challenges, the scores you get later will effect "Avg Vote Received" much LESS then the ones you get at first. So user that have been here a long time will never be able to change their overall picture stat because new votes barely effect it now.
So to get around this I was thinking it might be a better idea to calculate the "Avg Vote Received" by using only the highest 2/3rds of a user's votes and then divide that number instead of using all the votes. This gives a little insentive for users who "blew it" at first to redem themselves, and older users the ability to also improve their overall stat.

I'm not sure the answer to the later problem, but as far as the earlier, it just depends on the quality of every submission.
Take for instance whole numbers:
3, 3, 4, 4 - your average obviously 3.5
Now if you get a 6, average 4.0 it affected your score by .5
6, 6, 5, 5, - your average obviously 5.5
Now if you get a 3, average 5.0 if affected your score by .5
If you extrapolate that to 10 scores and many more decimal points, I think you'll see what I mean - each submission DOES reduce it by less, but your 10th submission affects it by the same whether you already had a 3 or a 5 - depending on the new score's relation - so if you're getting better, your average will go up.
At least that's the idea.

Thanks John I think that helped!
Mavrik, yep your figures are right... but my point was that with each submission you have, the next one (the vote you get) has less and less effect on "Avg Vote Recieved" over time. So to "get around this", the calc could base "Avg Vote Recieved" on the highest 2/3 of a users scores rather then ALL of them. This would give the effect of basing it on the user's best pictures instead of all of them. This would give a better "picture" (pardon the pun) of the user's current work (or at least the best 2/3rds of it) rather then bad pics they may have submitted early on while they were learning, etc. So this idea gets around that yet is fair over time as well.
Anyway, just an idea. :)

You could get a better idea of the users current work by averging the last 10 (or whatever #) submitions, rather than cutting off the lower 1/3 of their submitions. What if they started good, then their marks went way down? It wouldn't reflect their current work.
A 'floating' average would be easier too, than for them to log every score and filter out which ones are above and below the 2/3rd's mark.
It would be nice to see, but I have just started here, so it has no effect on me (yet).

Perhaps the average vote could remain the same and an additional stat could be added to average the last 50 shots sumbitted (or another agreed upon quantity). That way you can still see your total average, but you'll also be able to see if your average is improving over time.
Make sense? |

Whoa, 50 is a lot of submitions. How many do you have? Oh, never mind... I was thinking 10 maybe 20.

I just threw a number out as an example. 10 or 20 sounds good. |

Chris,
Your calculation assumes that you received the same number of votes in each challenge. The statistic is "average vote received" not "average score received." You need to take your score for each challenge, and multiply it by the number of votes you received in each challange, add them up, and finally divide by the total number of votes. In other words, you want to average your votes, not your scores.

I still don't know why anyone would want less than their whole - it may be hard to bring up after a few submissions were bad, but isn't that the point? I mean dang, I had a 3.96 on my first one and I'm on the OTHER side of this debate, saying - NO, I like going from 3.9 to 5.1 to 5.6 - that's the challenge for me. Leave it as is.

I think the average score (add the scores, divide by the number of challenges) would be interesting too... |
